There is some really weird knocking and it sounds like its coming from the rear suicide door of the truck. Honestly, it sounds like a screwdriver or something was left in side the door. I go around a corner or something and I can hear whatever it is fall over. There is no pattern to this, its not just when I turn left or right, sometimes it does it on bumps, sometimes not. but the sound is always in the same location. just behind my left ear as I'm driving. '16 trd offroad acess cab.

Anyone else have any issues like this?

My 2nd gen had a similar rattle and it turned out to be the upper door catch on the driver's side. The dealer replaced it and the rattle went away.

I hear it on mine too. It sounds like it may be the pendulum mechanism for the seatbelt lock.
Mine only does it when I close the driver's door hard.

This sounds like the most likely cause, I'm going to tear the door apart this weekend and see if you're right.

I also have noticed this knocking sound on my 16 OR AC. It seems to be on the passengerside, it almost sounds like there is some sort of inside door linkage that is loose, or maybe has popped out of its clips. It doesn't make the noise all of the time, just on random bumps. I checked and the seatbelt doesn't hit the door pillar. On the drivers side, where the seat belt comes out of the pillar, when I first got the truck 4,100 miles ago, I had a slight clicking noise, it sounds like something inside of the door is held together with double sided tape and the tape is losing its stickiness?? Any ideas on this? I have my 5K checkup coming up, and I'd hate to be held hostage at the dealership for a random noise thing. Albeit it is very annoying considering this truck is 99% street driven.

I have the same thing on a double cab, its around the right rear door and sounds like a socket rolling around in the frame, my boy says he can feel it under his feet...........I've looked around a bit but can't find anything obvious, funny thing is I don't hear it some days but other days its every movement of the truck, I think it goes away on wet days so was leaning towards the rear suspension

Hey guys... First post. I just picked up my 16 MGM DCLB OR on Monday. Drove it home and no problems. Next afternoon I hear the knocking the OP hears. Sounds like its coming from both the front and back of the cab on the passenger side. Totally random when I hear it. Sometimes I hear it in the driveway sometimes I hear it on the road (anywhere between a couple of MPH up to 50mph).

Took it in today to get it checked out. The tech looked at it for over an hour. He and I drove it and he heard the sound clearly. Said he tightened everything - the u-joints, the bed, the shocks, the side steps, the spare tire, he put a wrench on every bolt on the chassis but, the sound is still there. He thinks its the shocks. Problem he said was they don't have any in stock and that he has to wait for them from Toyota in Japan for warranty repair and that its a slow boat and it could be as long as six months.

He said the fact that Toyota doesn't have any in stock, not just this dealership, suggests to that they're replacing a lot of them. I tried to get them to take one off another truck on the lot... Need an act of congress to get that to happen.

Now i have to wait some undetermined amount of time just to check whether or not its the problem... Not happy about listening to that noise but I don't really want to drop a few hundred bucks to change them on my own only to find out its not the problem.

Anyway, good to be here on the site.

I remember one of the guys telling me once they took a door panel of a mustang apart years ago and found a glass cola bottle inside that was left in there from the assembly line lol. I've seen a screw driver and rags left places during the build.

thats my suspicion, something is in under my rear seats, just deciding whether to go through the hassle of recreating the noise at dealer or just removing the back seats etc myself

I've taken both the passengerside front door and the 3rd door and shaken them pretty good and there is no rattling noise, its not till I go over a bump and even then its random. To me it sounds like the linkage rods that operate the locks from the door handle to the latch itself might have popped out of whatever style of clip that holds it to the door frame. If I had time, I'd figure out how to remove the door cards and have a look see inside the door itself. A shock absorber, that is wild if that is in fact what the rattle noise that I am hearing. Does anyone have access to the parts breakdown of the passengerside door(s). I wonder if by looking at the diagram (collectively) we can come to a solution to the occasional rattle noise?

Yeah, I've shaken the door, taped down the seat belt, driving in circles trying to replicate the sounds. Nothing. I'm going to take it apart this weekend and post up some pics for you guys. Somebody earlier said it might be the pendulum mechanism for the seatbelt, and somebody else said that they only notice it when the door gets slammed really hard.

It's the door latch itself. There seems to be just the slightest bit of play between the latching mechanism and the bar. I wrapped a bit of electrical tap around it and now I can't hear it at all. This isn't a permanent solution, but it'll do till I figure something else out.

Thanks for posting.I had my wife in the truck yesterday and we drove over 200 miles, and I did not hear the rattle once, so now I wonder if you have a passenger who wears their safety belt, the belt has extra tension on the 3rd door which prohibits the latch / locking mechanism from the occasional rattling? Thanks for the pic.

Mine is a 2nd gen double cab and has this same sound like a socket rolling around.

I have Dakars and Old Man Emu shocks and it still does it so I doubt it's the shocks or springs.

Mine doesnt sound like a socket rolling around, it sounds more like some linkage popped out of its holding clip. When I do hear the noise it is really brief.

Maybe you can get them to reimburse you the cost of what they'd sell those stock for through their parts department, and put that toward some kind of upgrade for some better shocks? It may be worth asking.
