Knocking noise after front lift and bumper install

I have a 2013 DBCB OR - last weekend I installed Icon front coil overs and a new Pelfreybilt steel bumper. Everything seemed to go perfectly. But now, on the front passenger side, if that tire, and only that tire, hits a pot hole or bump and occasionally if I'm turning with a little speed I hear a knocking noise. Like one big knock/bang. My first thought was that it was the LCA's so I made sure they were torqued correctly and they are. I then took off and put back on the wheels and made sure all lug nuts were tighten properly. I keep looking to see if I can tell where the knock is happening but I don't see any specific rubbed spots. The bolts for the coil-overs are all tight.

I'm about to put a GoPro camera under there because i really have no idea what could be flexing or knocking. On the highway it rides fine, unless I hit a bump just on that side. Maybe its the sway bar re-locator that comes with the Icon Coil-overs?

If anyone has any ideas or guess or experience with this I'm all ears.. I'll be troubleshooting as I go and I'll keep updating the thread with what i can find.

I've been looking for that but haven't seen any rub marks yet. Any tips on how to show rubbing? My only thought is to stick the GoPro down there to get an actual view of whats hitting.. is there any type of powder or dust people use to show where things are rubbing?

Ok, now this seems like a dumb question.. but when you say chalk.. do you mean just take a stick a of white chalk and do my best do draw all over the parts? Or is there a better method..

 

be sure its not ur brake pads................some pads DO move around and make a clink/clunk over bumps...Stupid, YES.......true............YES


I drove myself nuts hunting down a clunk over bumps...............I found a bump in the road thats convex and pretty easy to spot. The clank noise happend everytime I went over it at 20mph.....

I then tried it AT THE SAME SPEED, but just barley dragging my brakes......did this prolly a dozen times (I prolly looked crazy)....the noise went away when I dragged the brakes.

It is just 1 more thing to try and keep in mind............I may be WAAAAAAAAAAAAY off with ur truck, but I know it helped me find my noise.

You can get powdered chalk, like for rock climbing, goes on better.

 

just take the sway bar off

 

I thought I found where it was rubbing and I put a piece of tape over the part of the sway bar.. but so far that tape is unscathed.. I need to try to test it again today around lunch. Still no answer. My only other thought is that maybe the lower coil-over bushing is knocking around.. the bolt is as tight as I can get it and the two parts were put in according to the directions..

If I can't get this figured out today I'm taking to an off-road shop near me. I know they do these installs a lot so maybe they'll see whats going wrong.

 

I put a Relentless bumper on my truck this last weekend, and forgot to take off 2 bumper brackets. They are between the headlight and the flare on the bottom of the fender. They are held on with a single screw through the middle. When I hit a bump the bumper would contact those and make one hell of a racket. Pulled both of them off, and its good now. Not sure how similar the 11 and the 13s are, but its worth a look. All you will really be able to see from the top is 2 little clips that hold onto the fender. If you need pics let me know.

 

Pics would be appreciated. I think the 13 and the 11 front ends are pretty different, but I'd love to see exactly what you are talking about so I can check. This noise only happens occasionally and only on one side if I hit a bump just right..

I had the same issue when I put the coil-overs on. Most likely the shock is undercharged from the factory and that is causing your noise. I took mine off, took it down to a local shop, had it re-charged to the factory psi, put it back on and haven't had a problem since. but the Icon shocks don't have a normal valve coming out so you have to find a place with the needle type to put nitrogen in.

 

Did you get an alignment after the lift? Mine made a clunky noise when I went over speed bumps. Come to find out my alignment bolts on the bottom were not torque right. They seem tight when I checked it but you have to torque it right.

 

I did get an alignment. I think it might be my bumper now. Had a friend stand out side it while i went up and back down a curb causing the noise. He pointed out that the bumper was touching part of the metal under my headlights on the side, and that the driver side had enough clearance that it wasn't touching it. So this weekend I plan on adjusting the bumper so it has more clearance on that side. I also went by my local off-road shop and they agreed that it looked like it was the bumper rubbing. They checked my install of the shocks and said everything looked good.

i have not had a chance to check if the shock is loaded correctly like NVWIGGINS suggested, though that will be my next check if the bumper turns out to not be the cause.

Skidooman - Mine is different but I do have a similar piece that my bumper is touching, though its a slightly different location. Not sure I can take it off but I know I can adjust the bumper so that it doesn't touch it. Hoping that is the fix.

Turns out it was that bumper bracket that Skidooman posted. I removed both and adjusted bumper to make sure it wasn't touching anything and had room for the body flex. Been perfect since.
