Well I have noticed engine noise also when its cold outside its only when its real cold outside and the truck is dead cold .I only have 32k on my truck and am not very happy about it .I am gonna take it to the dealer and I know they will say that there is no noise that they can hear .I have worked on engines for years and never had one this new make this much noisy when cold . Sure I've had engines that were noise on cold start ups but most of them had 150k + on them not 32k. I have always ran mobil one 0w-20 and 5w30 since the first oil change and have kept up with them as well .I may switch back to 0w-20 and see if that helps as I currently have 5w 30 in there .

Add me to the list also..I have a 60,000 mile, 2004 pre-runner with the 2.7 litre 4 cyl. knocks loud when cold. the dealer started it after it sat all night and the tech said there is nothing out of the normal and his does the same thing..this is a piston slap noise and if it was dis-assembled ,you would see the teflon patchs on the piston skirts worn off. They are supposed to call me when the district service manager is scheduled to arrive. i would expect this in a dodge or chevy, but not a toyota with 60,000 miles.

Im switching over to full synthetic and see if that helps. I know mine is an oil issue because it goes away after a few seconds....

My truck has been at a toyota dealership, they say my knock is excessive at 60,000 miles. i dropped it off so the dsm and i could start it and talk.Well, the district service manager came and went,he didn't have time to meet with me,even though we had an appointment...How is that for toyota customer service?...Amazing how the 800 customer relations people and the district service manager don't really care..and my immediate family owns 5 toyotas, not including 2 in laws, all because i recommended them..now the "customer assistance" number is so covered up with accelerator issue calls, they tell me to call back...I love my toyotas, but they sure are going through a rough time, and i will reserve judgement until i give them another chance..The 1st 2 chances i gave them didn't work out so well.

Well I guess I'm not alone. My 99 with 230k just started it this winter and I almost puked when I first heard it. It was January of 2011 and this morning was about 7* here and she was knocking. I never got out of the neighborhood before I parked my baby back in the garage and stole pops car. I Change my Synthetic to 5w30 and this was the first time it has ever done this. I'll be changing it again soon back to 10w30. Not sure which one is right but I pray it goes away. Mechanic didn't hear anything the first time. After it started the first time I pulled over and sat for a minute then drove real easy and it went away and didn't come back for a month. I wonder if we don't have something blocking oil movement. My check engine light came on and it says misfire cylinder 3. I had this problem last summer and had to change out a coil pack. She's given me lots of great miles and I sure hope I can keep her going.

Hey, I was just curious if you have figured out that knocking noise? I have a 2007 tacoma 2.7 and it does exactly as you explained. I just got off the phone with Toyota and they said they hadn't heard anything about it before. I also took it to a toyota dealer and they couldn't figure it out ( probably because it wasn't cold enough to make the noise)

My 04 2.7 does the same thing when I first got it from the dealer it had 105,000 miles on it brought it back 15 days later told him it was making that noise they left it overnight for two days and every morning they said they didn't hear anything that's a bunch of bullshit yeah they know about it they just don't want to fix it. I have 152,000 miles on it now and it still does it so just get used to it or have a professional fix it hasn't done any damage. like the other guy said I let mine run usually for about 2 to 3 minutes before even think about driving it. It only does it when it's cold out in the early spring late fall and definitely winter. It's definitely not a piston knock sounds more like a rod knock or a valve.

As I said earlier mine does the same thing and it might be when the four hamsters first get in there wheel to power our truck when we turn the key maybe when they start running they hit each other and until they all sync up and get up to speed it make some rattling and knocks

Well the third gens are doing it to. 2016 2.7 with 77k been doing it for a couple years now. Generally below 32 temps. Running 0W20, oil change every 5k. Noticing no other major issues.

My 3.4 knocked during the winter at startup on mobil 1 5w 30. Switched to Pennzoil this winter because of its cold flow characteristics and the knock stopped.

Add me to the list on this. 2015 2.7 Tacoma. Tick/Knock on start up. Doesn’t have to be super cold, evident at less than 40 degrees often. Goes away when warm, and on a hot/warm day doesn’t really happen. Park on slight hill, thought maybe oil would empty from timing cover and just take time to pump back when cranked. Who knows.

I've had this issue for a few years now, it started beyond 250k miles and it still going on where I spend a few minutes in the morning warming up so I keep it from happening. I do not have any knock sensor codes so probably not the issue. Beyond 380k miles now im not too worry about it but I sure would like to know what the heck is making that noise in the morning.

1" rear drop. Currently sits 34.5" in the front and 35.0" in the rear.
Yup. Mine has started knocking as well. Went out this morning and knock knock knock until the engine warmed up a little bit. Seems to be similar to a lot of people on here. Happens below 40 and definitely after sitting all night in the 30s or 20s.

2012 2.7L TR. ~130,000 miles. 0w20 full synthetic changed regularly.

Same here -2015 2.7 with 140,000 - it also seems that it takes longer for the oil pressure light to turn off when cold

Just noticed knock this morning, goes away after 30 seconds or so. I have 270K on my 2004 3RZ. I use 5w30 full synthetic every 3k miles.
