    secret stuff.
Use a crowfoot wrench. Better than the open end wrench or screwdriver.

Just joined last night and looked straight away for a solution to my bed box problem. That is, not being able to justify paying for a box from the dealer. I had looked at the Kobalt boxes at Lowes and didn't think that the grip rites would work on my new 2010 SR5 Double Cab Long Bed! I also didn't want to drill holes in the rails.
Then came DMB's solution, with pics! By the way, the pics are what gave me the confidence to drive over to Lowes, pick up the box, nuts, bolts and washers and do the install right under the pavilion in their pick up zone. 30 minutes including a trip back inside for a smaller washer, fender washers only come in 1.25, no 1.00 inch in stock, so I had to go with a regular washer.
    Thanks a bundle!

As soon as I find the cord to my camera I will!
I used one set of the grip rites and the box came with cut slots. Each side of the box had two slots toward the front and two toward the back. I secured one side from the front and the other from the back set of slots, if that makes sense. Thought that might reduce any wobble, but probably not necessary. Just didn't want to spend an extra $27. Mistake?

Thank you, I bought the Kolbalt box a few days ago and I have been thinking of a couple of different ways of installing it and your way seems perfect

It should look good because it would match your rims

Well then just get it, and if you decide you'd rather have black, just paint it, bed line it, or powdercoat it.

This was a great write up. I picked up the Tool box during the Black Friday sale for $98 and used the instructions in this post to install it using the grip rite set up.

For future reference I used a M8X1.25 40mm length bolts with the matching nuts and slightly larger washers to secure to the rail while still using the Toyota spin on dial.

Dude...you are a friggin GENIOUS! I just picked up one of the Kobalt narrow-width boxes from Lowes (on sale for $98.00!).....After scratching my melon trying to figure out how to avoid using J-Hooks...I stumbled upon your write-up....Thanks a bunch!! I just did what you did.....took me all of 15 minutes...and worked PERFECT!

There's a thread on TW about bed rail fasteners.
You can grind down Unistrut Nuts to fit inside the rail, hence not Wrench needed.
One of a number of solutions
Also someone here making small threaded blocks to fit in the rails
    Thanks for the post
