I just got this exact same box too! I got mine on Black Friday for $98.. figured I couldn't go wrong! :)

Like everyone else, I don't want to drill down into my rails like the directions for the box suggest. The J-Bolts are a great idea, and cheap. I'm not really wanting to use my cleats because they've proven useful on more than one occasion for me.

I'm thinking about getting some Toyota mounts from the toolbox manufacturer that i found here, but I'm having a hard time justifying paying more for the shipping (almost $12) than the actual parts(less than $10).

So if you're wanting to spend some money, these are still cheaper than the mounts that you can get at lowe's for $30 (including shipping)..

The real reason for this post:

What do you guys think.. will the mounts in the link provided be worth the money, or will 2 J bolts and some locking nuts be just as good?

I just bought a black low-pro UWS from ZonKs. J-hooks work just fine @ .90 cents each x 4. I don't know what you guys are talking about drilling into the rail . Drilling is unnecessary. The rails have open slots at the bottom that the J-hooks go in & hook onto. Just run your fingers along the bottom edge of the rail to locate & feel them up :p. They line up perfectly with your truck box. Just put your box where you want it, measure location where the J-hooks will fasten, measure & mark that location on the box, then drill slightly larger holes on the box for some final adjustments, if necessary. Remember to measure twice & drill once. If you have a black box like mine, paint the hooks, nuts & washers black for a cleaner look. Try not to over tighten the J-hooks. It puts undo stress to the rails. That simple & secure. This way you can keep your cleats for other uses.

Along the exterior back of the box, where it comes into contact with the back rail, I put some black self adhesive foam/rubber strip ($4 @ Lowe's) to prevent paint damage & scuff marks. Also provides some cush. Overkill maybe, but I like.

Those Toyota fasteners are sweet for $10, but shipping cost doubles the price. The J-hooks are just as effective and can be easily removed if needed. Now with the money you saved, buy yourself a 6-pack :cheers:and enjoy:drunk:.

Great post. I went out and got the same tool box and mounted it using the method you described, except I used the screwdriver vs wrench method for tightening the inside bolt. Also I used stainless steel bolts, nuts, etc. It took me a few trips to Ace, but I determined the best length hex bolt is 1 inch.

Thanks again for the great post!!!

damn I wish I would have seen this thread sooner. I drilled mine. It's been holding up fine for the last few months but those mounts are sweet.

For all who have this toolbox, is it waterproof?

(I know this thread is old, but its already been revived recently, so screw it.)

Anyone know what would work to mount this on a first gen? Our bed rails fold over and aren't very strong. Suggestions? Would the grip rites work? I like to stay away from j-hooks they just don't look like they would be very secure

My issue is that they wouldnt really make contact with the bed rails since they aren't curved underneath. Is there something I'm missing here?

I could drill but it's not my first option. Our rails are plain and simple, imagine an F except take the lower horizontal line away and put in a vertical line at the right point going about an inch down

That might be a better option there are some pre drilled holes in the side rails but I'm sure I'd have to drill at least one more set.

I have this same box. Hope you like your better than i like mine. I wouldnt take this box again if i could get it for $10. Not enough space, cheap handles that get to where they dont get to open, just a few things i dont care for. But then again, you get what u pay for.

Do you know what the Cubic feet of your tool box is? I found a few different ones that are not the low profile box and I wanted to make sure their size would fit the tacoma. It says they will fit but they are 12+ cubic feet, thats a lot for a tacoma bed, no? Thanks!

Anyone had a problem with these toolboxes and the lock mechanism? I read that the system is not great before I bought it, but I have a real hard time putting the damn key in the mechanism. The key doesn't seem to want to go in and I have to jiggle is around for like 30 seconds everytime I try to unlock / lock.
