lol. It's mostly to make sure that there's no known or potentially existing fossily stuff of some value (like, for Ben's amusement) in the area before they start excavating, drilling, mayhemming.

Little River Band or Hall & Oates would be my guess.

Somebody tell me what these rocks are called

    up close
    [IMG]

and there is a large grouping of them. nothing else like them in the area
    [IMG]

In the sunlight they have a black-blue shimmer to them - sort of looks like graphite if you scribble on a page with a pencil really heavily. Indoors under artificial light you can't see the blue. The rocks all seems to be some type of sandstone and the black is just a thin layer on the outside. The area was volcanic at some point and there is a volcanic cone nearby if that matters at all.

I have a small chunk of the rock, if it gets sunny enough later I can gets pics of it.

Not good, you should be quarantined, those are usually highly radio active! Has that 3rd ear grown yet or do you have any abnormal strengths that you would not usually have?

What KPT said. Looks like "desert varnish" AKA rock varnish, which is essentially a weathering phenomenon on the outer surface of rocks that contain clay minerals that weather into manganese oxide -- something you might commonly see on sandstone in a relatively dry arid place.

That makes sense that it could be an effect of weathering. If you notice the rocks higher up have more color, those lower to the ground (and below snowpack most of the year) and in the water have less color to them. Is this very common? I can't say I've even seen it before. And its weird that the sunlight has an effect on the coloring as well...

    English?
