I have no idea what's available for droids and other smartphones. I have an iPhone. That app is called Iapetus Quadrivium. I've had it for a long time, and couldn't find it in the App Store just now. I did find a similar one called GeoClock though, for $1.99.

There's some really cool geology apps available. There's one called Strike and Dip that basically turns your phone into a Brunton. It's quite accurate, too. Also geotimescale is an annotated geologic time scale. Jurassic Coast is a photo tour of the Jurassic Coast of southern England- not the most useful perhaps but kinda interesting. USGS Seismic is a list of recent earthquakes around the world. There's also geology apps for a bunch of different states. Search "geology" in the app store, lots of stuff available.

But I has a yellow rock I found on the side of the road either inside or outside of the park. Seeing you weild an axe makes me reluctant to answer with the truth. :D

Sounds like you are not the best ambassador Yellowstone has at its disposal. LOL

I hear you. What a bunch of dummies that wanted a steam bath. ;)

When I worked for the phone company I actually carried spare maps of DC in my truck. Lost people were always asking me for directions. I would show them where they are on the map and where they had to go to and then give them the map. Back then it was really easy to find free maps. :)

But hey, we can always count on derps in National Parks: http://www.kmph-kfre.com/story/15119845/tourists-swept-over-waterfall-presumed-dead

Man. 317 ft to the bottom of the waterfall. That's long enough to think about the fact that it's going to hurt and you're going to die. *Shiver*

I was looking for pics of an incredible mountain scarp in the Eastern Sierras, but then I stumbled across these pics from Snow Mountain in the northern Coast Range in Lake County, CA. It is located directly north of Clear Lake between I5 and US 101 in a volcanic region.

Here's the context shot of the summit. The other shots are details from the outcrop at upper center.

Quartz and lichen in a greenish, coarse-grained, uh, rock???
And this is the same type of rock with an incredible rainbow-like streaks of something? Is this just slight mineral variations in a contacting surface, or something else?
