    yea I guess there was a salt mine under the lake and then the lake sunk into the salt mine then then where the lake was filled back in with water from the gulf and turned into a salt water lake! craziest shit ive read in a while!

    I was able to find a few spots via google earth.
    here is a smaller one. You can see the oil and salt water tank batteries to the bottom right

    neglect, mostly.
    that's the best i understand it as well. people get all bent out of shape about fracking but they don't understand it. fracking for natural gas isn't so bad, its all the bad things that could (and in the past, have) happened when there is failed casing or segment in the shaft than pollute the groundwater.

    ive taken somewhat of an interest in the subject over the past semester, my prof in my environmental policy classes is the states expert in mineral rights and stuff like that. crazy smart guy. . i see him on the news all the time getting interviewed about it. pretty neat . .. i know, kudos to me :rolleyes:

    Don't know if you've mentioned it yet Keith or not but from an educated standpoint: What are the risks of collapse from removing all the oilsands via SAGD methods? A lot of sand slurry comes out with the oil, and we've had some minor land slumping in the area. Only 1 cave-in that I know off where there was like a 20ft diametre chunk of land dropped about 10 ft. Heard rumours of a few others, I guess it's considered not a big deal because we don't send people down the holes.

    Makes sense, we have a lot of sand and clay up here, seems to be the main ground types. It's cool, I can go out to the mine and see the mine walls even 7-8 shelves deep in some places.

    thats what I was thinking after I started looking at it more. lots of the tanks were cheap fiberglass and could have leaked out and just killed everything.

    Hello fellow geo-scientists. Sorry it took so long for me to get involved on this thread. Im still studying geology in college. Haven't made up my mind if I should go for more of a structural/historical rout or maybe hydro/environmental.
