I really wish I could have done something in forestry or biology...and worked for the USFS or NPS :( Stupid allergies...the great irony of my life. Why am I horribly allergic to pine trees when I love to be outdoors?!?!?

    :confused::rolleyes:

Missoula ain't so bad weather wise.

:notsure: They do have one of the best forestry programs around. Maybe the Wildland Restoration courses?

I have minor allergies, and I carry drugs around with me when I go camping, drugs ftw.

As for weather, I can barely handle the "winter" we get here, the farthest north I am looking for school is Starkville, Mississippi, and i will probably freeze to death during my first winter there :anonymous:

Its possible. You have to sustain a certain amount of injuies per year, change your spelling, and grammer use, and discover a fondness for jagermiester.

Was making a soil science study guide for my midterm and came across this thread while I am being distracted. The C horizon is the first to form from parent material correct? Can someone explain why?

"C" soil is the only soil composed entirely of rock. "A" and "B" have organic compounds in it.

Who let the soil scientist in here? :D

I guess he can stay. Just what 4x4 said, C horizon is the first layer of actual rock. A is straight soil, B is a mix of soil and rock.

I was a nerdy kid with a rock collection. :anonymous:

Also, I got a degree in business admin and hated my classes, then hated my job when I graduated. But I went to my geology class every day, never missed and was enthusiastic. Shoulda changed my major then but didn't as I was late in my degree program. Ended up going back for bachelor's and master's degrees in geology.

Also I like to color and play with rocks. :D

I love my career. It's fun and interesting and I'm happy to go to work. And it pays well: $50K+ with a bachelor's and no experience, and on up from there if you are willing to work for it. As for my specific job, I'm still content with it after about a year and a half. Keith is an office geologist, which to be honest is starting to look better and better. I'm working in the oil fields and living on oil rigs half the time and sometimes that really sucks. But overall, I wake up in the morning feeling optimistic about my career and my life, and that's pretty awesome. It wasn't always the case, because I was hands down in the wrong career and it affected my ability to be happy even when I wasn't at work.

Getting it right! LOL The first well I ever geosteered could not have gone better (it takes a team though, it certainly wasn't just me). It went so well that a poster of that well cross-section is hanging in the lobby of our corporate offices, so that makes me feel pretty good. Getting things technically correct is pretty awesome. One of my professors liked to say there's nothing more humbling than the combination of Mother Nature and the drill bit. Truer words were never spoken.

In addition, I can be outside a fair bit. The professional conferences are badass, you can go on field trips and see lots of awesome geology and indeed part of a number of these conferences every day is afternoon beer hour (no kidding. The book store at the Geological Society of America annual meeting sold an atlas of local beers throughout the world). It's a great profession if you like learning things, too. Also we have the longest entry of any profession on Uncyclopedia.

It becomes something you can't turn off, your mind just operates that way. You drive along the road and look at road cuts. You go out for a hike and you notice what the rocks are doing. You walk up someone's driveway and look at the gravel. It's not like you can go somewhere without rocks.

I think the vast majority of us would agree.

Hey! I applied to U of Wyoming. But in the end I stayed in Oklahoma because Wyoming sent me a rejection letter. :D

BTW it was 45 and rainy here today.
