Anyone have the ktjo tailgate lock fail on them? Seems like solenoid went bad on mine. 75% of time it's a faint clunk and won't unlock my tailgate and I need to use the key. Sometimes it works.

I sure hope mine doesn’t fail it was installed by Southeast Toyota Distributors and I hear they sometimes install the Pop and Lock which is inferior to the OEM per the internet.

It might not be the solenoid. If it's actually trying to lock/unlock then the solenoid might be fine. You might check and see if the linkage is binding or maybe just needs some lube.

BTW KTJO seems to have a bad rep here but I have/had many of their 3rd Gen parts and never had an issue.

There’s more than one that believe they’re the same, but I can’t prove. Either way, my PnL has been going 6 years, so I wouldn’t say it’s inferior.

Bad choice of an adjective, it was some crap I read somewhere I’m sure the pop and lock is just as good as OEM.

I had a pop n’ lock on my 05 worked great for about 6 years then it started to do exactly what you are describing. Pulled the tailgate panel, cleaned the linear actuator shaft, a few drops of tri-flow, moved the actuator manually a few times and it worked perfectly until I sold it in 2017.

My pop n lock was sounding weak after like 4 years. I lubed it up and it was good as new.

My Son's factory tailgate lock just failed a few days ago. We had to force entry through the factory cover damaging it but I had another cover on hand. So, we accessed the tailgate lock and had to remove the actuator and go back to stock for now. I don't think he is going to replace it and keep it stock for now. My OEM unit has been flawless, keep in mind both ours are 2018 and the units have been in for like 4 years. He has driven his 100k miles and I have 30k miles garaged everyday so maybe that has something to do with it.

Why would you have to force entry? Why not just use key?

My Taco is a 17 and the tailgate opener is OEM. Kent50 is correct.

I had similar issue with it trying to lock and unlock but failing to do the job. I opened up the tailgate and noticed it had a LOT of grease, which was dry and caking up, where the linkage and actuator interface. I cleaned off the old grease with a rag and solvent. Testing it with no grease the lock/unlock function worked flawlessly. I applied some red grease that I had handy and retested. Perfect function. The next near freeze we had here in FL, it was sluggish. Worked after multiple attempts but was clearly working. With temps back up to the normal or slightly higher for my area it has not missed a beat.

Moral of the story is after 7-8 years the grease may be thickened with dirt and age. Clean it off and replace it with one appropriate for your area temps and you will likely be fine for a few more years.
