Theres DOZENS of dyno's, and that HP to Torque.

The Toyota Torque curve really isnt a curve its basically a flat line until 6000 RPM then drops off.

What you are posting is the HP curve

What about the consensus on the OVTune? I think its pretty obvious this truck doesn't make much power down low. Makes plenty up top, though!

Neither of them do, 4.0 or 3.5. The engine isn't the issue, the transmission, gearing etc all play their part.

I can't read your OVtune pic but from the looks of it it generates about 200 at 2000....

Again, you are looking at HP, we are talking about torque

Right you are. Looks to be similar torque numbers.

I wish we didnt have to troll through so many images just to find some simple data. It was kind of a pain to find the right charts in google.

and even that looks to be wheel hp /tq for the 4.0 and crank for the 3.5

someone just needs to take a stock 2nd gen and a stock 3rd gen back to back on a dyno.

I think it is just the label on the right side is misleading. 320kW equals 240hp, which is what I think I have seen for other 3rd Gen peak HP? The loss is pretty darn low considering. About 10%. That's motorcycle domain.

A better look at one set of OVtune pulls (at the wheels):

Torque is top "flat" set of lines (scale on left).

HP is bottom lines that rise all the way across (scale on right).

    Another more recent set:

Notice the change in torque 2200 on up. Usable gains. No butt dyno.

    91 Octane file of course.

Last month my son bought a 2014 Dcsb with 34k miles.

    Nice truck.

Got a chance to drive it quite a bit. After hearing all the crap going back and forth I was mildly surprised that it was not the vaunted torque monster many have claimed it to be.

How are so many people convinced that the 4.0 makes so much more torque earlier in the power band?

Wide open throttle both the 2nd gen & 3rd gen feel about the same to me, maybe a slight edge to the 2nd gen. In day to day driving, towing and hauling in a mountainous region I'd pick the 4.0L every time.

Right now I own a 4.0L 6spd Frontier Pro-4x, it just goes. Smooth, quiet responsive engine and the gearing is bang on. For reference I rarely need to rev it beyond 3000, redline is 6250.

I don't think anyone in their right mind would call the old 4.0 a Torque Monster, common sense says the 3rd Gen weighs more than a 2nd Gen and has a little less grunt down low.

Had a 2007 2nd gen Toyota which I loved but traded in last year due to the need of a rusty frame replacement. Replaced it with the the 3rd gen 2017 model pretty much sight unseen assuming it would only be an improvement over the previous generation. That was probably not such a good idea. Regardless of the numbers posters are throwing around on here, it FEELS like I'm driving a brick compared to the previous generation with the 4.0 L. I've gotten somewhat used to it over the last year, and I understand that it is a truck after all. And it does an excellent job off-roading during my favorite New England shoreline excursions.

But there's still one thing that drives me nuts. I have a 21 foot, 4,100 # travel trailer I tow from time to time to my various destinations. The 2nd gen pulled it with relative ease with minimal gear hunting and minimal engine noise. I also got a pretty steady 14 MPG while towing it which I thought was acceptable. With the the third gen its a whole different story. The gear hunting is incredibly annoying and the cabin noise is ear splitting.

Furthermore, the MPG is worse as well. I frequently visit a campground in Connecticut from RI and take the same route, with the same stuff using the same gas, I get 10.9 MPG, 3 MPG less.

I might even be able to live with that if the driving experience were better but the poorer gas mileage, the incessant gear hunting and the ear splitting noise really ruin the enjoyment.

Now before you all suggest I should have procured a truck with a bigger engine, remember I had my 2007 for ten years and was incredibly happy with it. Shame on me for expecting a similar experience sight unseen. 20180618_132714.jpg

Yeah, camper and bigger boat wise, depending on the frequency can justify a bigger truck real quick.

Yes. The hp numbers games means little. Towing is the true test of torque and the 4L wins by leaps and bounds. I tow the maximum with my gen2 but couldn’t imagine towing this with a minivan. 3CD76453-3B23-4473-8604-F11A98DB230B.jpg
Nothing against the 2gr... just not a proper truck motor.
