My wife wanted a truck... I got 'us' (her) one :p but it's mine when she backs it into the fence and punches a hole in the tail light, and I'm tasked with finding a replacement *doe*

Oh and it's our only vehicle

Kind of like kids. When they get all A's, they're hers, but when they misbehave, they're 'your kids!'

Lots of folks think nowadays it makes no difference. Do what makes you happy. Saw a young boy, probably 14-15, waiting for the school bus. He was wearing a dress. To each their own

I agree with gender based things being marketed stupidly... However bikes (although I can't say all of them nowadays) were traditionally manufactured differently for men and women since back in the day women wore skirts and it was very taboo to have to lift up one leg too high to get over the top rail of the frame, potentially exposing themselves. So manufacturers either Eliminated all together the top rail of the frame or lowered it to maintain the frames structural integrity.

If they were truly making bikes to fit the genders, why do they put a bar on boys/men's bikes? I don't have boy parts, but even I know that's gonna hurt someone sooner or later!

A lot of the young girls nowadays don't wear underwear and like to show all their stuff on-line with their friends.

It's a completely different world than back in my days.

My wife hates it when they make pink jerseys for teams and call them "girl" jerseys. The cut of the jersey is different, understandably, but why make it pink? Make it the damn team colors....

The top bar is a structural piece.

The bike otherwise folding in half when it's ridden off a curb is not gender specific.

Can't be too structural if they can make 'girls' bikes differently.

They were expected not to be ridden as hard as men's bikes... Cause... Sexism I guess? There was a YouTube video I watched... Cause i literally had that exact question about men's/women's bikes. I was pleasantly surprised there was even a video about it. I know some pretty useless facts

Its made that way for girls so that they don't have to throw a leg over whilst wearing a skirt, showing their bloomers to all the boys.

It's entirely structural. High end women's bikes don't have a different top bar design than the male versions do.

Lower end bikes do, not because strength is important (it is, but modern materials are stronger now than they were in the 1950s), but because it's a traditional design of women's bikes.

When bikes were all the rage, women still wore dresses every day and the lowered standover height/top bar design kept them from exposing themselves accidentally. It's stayed that way because there's no need to change it. The extra strength of a straight top bar isn't needed.

So it wasn't born of sexism or gender inequality, it was born of modesty - and that modesty wasn't imposed, it was desired.

.. you said a pink bike isn't a girls bike, which I agree. You said "why have a top bar on boys bikes," which was discussed as being unrelated to gender and everything to do with construction.

    Now you're irritated?

    A bike is a bike.

The top bar is there out of necessity and designed as such.

Two modern high end bikes, one for female proportions and one for male. Virtually indistinguishable in design.

I still appreciate your posts and don't quite understand the frustration.

Not irritated at all. I'm saying that if bikes were designed with gender in mind, bikes would not have top bars. Who could possibly think a metal rod between your legs on a moving object is a good thing?
