Ran into a coworker from years ago, a decade plus, and we had us a nice chat. Back in the day she was in really bad shape. Didn't eat right, or exercise, and she was on anti-depressants plus numerous other meds.

Small framed gal 5'5" or so and weighed around 150/160. So she was definitely overweight, fat actually. Good look'n gal too, but just didn't take care of her self.

Then one day she asked me how I stay so fit look'n. That it must be nice. I thought to myself; seriously......it takes dedication and discipline. So we talked and talked and became ver good friends.

I told her for just one month to try and eat healthy. No processed foods, nothing made by man. If it's in a box or ready made, Forgetaboutit. I told her the number one cause of depression is Food.

You eat crap you will not only feel like crap, but you will also look like crap. It may take awhile, but slowly all that Processe crap will wreak havoc on your body.

After a month of eating healthy, following my plan, sure enough she started feeling better. She even started going for a one mile walk every morning first thing! After a few months that walk turned into a jog, and she then added in some strength/weight training.

Now a decade later, she's now 40 years old and looks Marvelous! She told me she's never in her life been in this good of shape. Body Fat: 21%. Has a sexy six pack and feels better than when she was in her 20s.

She no longer takes any meds. No more high blood pressure, she was also borderline diabetic. She went from six meds a decade ago to Zero. Her annual physical numbers are perfect. Her doc is very happy and impressed. She takes a multi vitamin once a day, plus drinks a couple protein drinks to get all her amino acids.

She can't believe how much food she eats everyday. I told her when you eat clean/healthy it's nearly impossible to gain weight. Although, like myself, she has noticed how difficult it is to add muscle. Being petite makes it tough to add muscle. But I told her she looks Perfect!

And Wow is she strong. We had a good workout, I was very impressed when I saw her benching her body weight for reps. That may not be impressive to the guys, but for a petite gal that's very impressive indeed.

It made me very happy to see her doing so well. What a difference she has made, from fat and depressed to fit and happy go lucky! Like the saying goes: you are what you eat.

Best Xmas present I got was from her. A big hug and a truly sincere heart felt "Thank You".

It's a good feeling knowing you made a difference in someone's life!

Bravo! to her. It takes hard work and dedication. As well as self control and discipline.

If you ever served, think back to how in just a few months boot camp changed your physique. Lean and Mean!

    I hear ya!

My doctor, of Asian descent, although he is western trained physician, he mixes in eastern medicine. Other than Doctor Oz I really don't know how many doctors push eating the right foods and herbs.

He's big on natural remedies and nutrition. Like eating a raw clove of garlic daily. Or how many people still eat sardines, well other than me! Apple cider vinegar!

Anyway, he always tells me how important exercise is, and when you're young exercise is just having fun! You run around, climb trees, ride your bike, skateboard, swim, or play some sort of sports with your friends.

But when you get older, exercise is work. It takes effort, you have to make time, and he always tells me that most of his patients put more work into their excuses than it would actually take to exercise. LOL

    Bad habits are easy......

Depends on the doctor too. Some are just pill pushers, unreal.

Good or bad, routines are key. The trick is which of those 2 is your routine.

I agree 100%. Some doctors are only in it for the money. I went thru a couple doctors trying to find the one I wanted as my primary doc. Choose one and after my first annual physical I told him "you're fired". He was shocked

I love my routine! Big Time! I wake up every morning excited and butt naked doing my happy dance ready to start my routine. Protein drink first thing and right into my workout. About one hour every morning!

Now of course things have changed over the years. I no longer lift heavy. The older you get the greater your chance of injury regardless of careful you are. Hormone levels drop dramatically the older you get.

A few decades ago when I was at my heaviest body weight, 121 pounds, and lifting at my max capacity, squatting 265 for reps, 315 for two, I was at somewhere around 18% body fat. Which is very very lean for a female. Just to maintain that 121 pounds it took a calorie intake of approx 3,200 just to maintain.

That was a tough routine. But man oh man did I feel good, and strong! Nowadays I use mostly body weight resistance. Lots of push-ups, pull-ups, dips, hand-stands, etc. Love bodycore exercises. Still use free weights, but less weight, higher reps. Oh, and slower movements, that's very important.

For example; every gal knows the best butt exercise, and who doesn't love a nice butt, is lunges. So I do mine, high reps, 60 reps on each leg, so that's 120 reps in one set. Then I do another set, same amount, but this time reverse lunges. Oh, almost forgot to mention, and yes that's with free weights. I put 65 pounds on the curl bar and carry it behind my neck/on my shoulders the entire set.

Feel the burn, you bet, and a good drenching sweat. Love Decline push-ups, up to 26 now, and those are all the way down, none of this half ass stuff. If you're not sure what a decline push-up is, it's the same as a regular push-up except you put your feet on a bench. 15-20 inches high is good. That actually makes the push-ups much harder because it angles your body weight so you are lifting more of your weight!

    Butt naked you say? haha

I do my lifting at night. Not ideal but with my schedule it is all I can do really. And at my age I'm not about to overdo it, plus risk being in trouble without a spotter.

    Whatever works for you!

Spotter is indeed important. My OL Fart hubby still lifts fairly heavy, 300+ pounds benching, and he uses two metal saw horses. So if he ever gets stuck he can still slide out from under it, the bar will just be pressing on his chest when it's on the saw horses.

Bet ya it saved him more than once. But at 60 he shouldn't be lifting that heavy. But whenever I tell him that m pretty sure all he hears is: blah blah blah......men

I have done 200 before but not many reps, plus the spotter thing. I can't get to a gym so my stuff is done at home.

I always suggest that everyone get one of those scales that measures Body Fat percentages. Women tend, more than men, to focus on their weight. The most important number is Body Fat %

You can weigh within the guidelines for your age, but still have a body fat that is too high. And that effects your health much more than your weight.

Also taking a good probiotic daily. Gut health is key. Almost all inflammation comes from the gut, which is the number one cause of depression.

You can get a decent scale for about $30 pretty much anywhere, Walmart/Target. Also weighing yourself should be part of your routine, and at the same time everyday. Mornings you are at your lightest.

I jot my numbers down daily, then average weekly. My scale has several numbers, weight, body fat %, water, bone mass, and muscle mass.

So for women: in your 20s 20-28% depending on your frame size, Petite low 20s vs husky frame higher 20s
    Women in their 30s 21-29%
    40s 22-30%
    50s 23-31%
    60s 24-32%

    Men 20s 14-20%
30s 15-21% and add one percent for each decade...... so 60s 19-25%

Stay within the recommended range and you should feel much better, more energy, and better sleep. For the men and big plus is staying in the low end range for your age greatly increases your Sex Drive!

Most guys don't realize that having a lot of belly fat decreases your testosterone levels. Not only that but much worse is it increases your estrogen levels. Umm, man boobs anyone. You don't see them on a lean body.

Forgot to mention about those Body Fat scales that the last two sets of numbers it gives you are based on your current condition and then the next set of numbers is what your "ideal" numbers should be.

So for example it will analyze your current numbers and based on your age, height, and weight, (height and age you program into the scale) and body fat %.

It will tell you what range you fall into such as Low, Optimal, Moderate, or High. Obviously Optimal is where you want to be!

The last set of numbers tells you what your "ideal" numbers should be, and how many calories it requires. So if you're underweight it will for example tell you that you need 2,000 calories to maintain your weight and 2,200 calories a day to reach your "ideal" numbers.

Or the opposite if you're overweight.

Had my scale for about 12 years and then one day it just went bonkers and quit working. Called the 800 number, they told me to ship back to them, and two weeks later they sent me their newest model free of charge. Pretty good deal, I've had this new one now for close to a decade. Still works great!

You can program several people into it, think it's six or so, the only thing I have to do is at the beginning of the year is update my age. Then it's good to go!

Got a little startled as this beautiful creature walked within six feet of me today! (I was toasty warm on the sofa, it strolled past the full length glass door). I was too awestruck to find my phone fast enough for a closer photo...
