This makes it the 5th time I've made a drive cross country. FWIW I really recommend Highway 50 through Nevada at night. Best damn drive ever!

You have to. I did CA to VA in 2002 and we took the 50 through Nevada at night. It's called the kinkiest highway and for good reason. We saw one car and we stopped around 11pm on the side of the road for an hour. No light pollution and the stars were brilliant. It's kind of an epiphany seeing the brilliance and wondering.

Made the drive back from VA to WA in 2005 and we took the southern route through FL to CA and it was meh. FWIW, I10 through Texas will make you want to punch yourself in the pecker. It just sucks.

Made my way fromCA to VA by way of WA and I went through Idaho, Montana and Wyoming and I'll say that is straight up God's country. The most beautiful hills and forrests you'll ever see. The heartland...I just can't stomach. Boring and flat but the back roads and small communities are pretty sweet. Amazing how people get along with the simplest of things and are happy.

I love driving and seeing the country. You just don't get the feeling from an airplane at 35k feet.

There's no discussion cause there's no comparison. One will be on the side of the road the other will be tearing up the twisties.

I know it wasn't. But I still have a feeling. A feeling that is worth feeling. Don't be cruel! :hattip:

We do driving vacations too. Our rule is no interstate highways. Usually each night in the hotel room, we look at the map, find a destination for the end of the next day and plan a route, stopping at any and every cool thing we see on the way.

Do it!!! I took my son from WA to AZ back in2010 for my sisters wedding and he recalls a lot of the trip (he was 5). He recalls the hops fields in Oregon, the canyons in Utah and Marble Canyon in AZ. The memories made during road trips last a lifetime!

It's so worth it. The country you see and exploring the back country more than make up for the little inconveniences.

Road trips used to be awesome...then 9 years ago I got a job that requires driving/being in a car for 12 hours

Just snap your fingers and put me at my vacation spot please

Meh, when you see so much it makes it worth it. So much of this country worth seeing and experiencing.

forgot to mention, I also drove from Alaska to California in 2001. My dad met me in Kodiak and we took the ferry to Homer. Drove from there to Petaluma CA and it was priceless. Moose, elk, big horn sheep, bears, crystal clear lakes and the tundra. Went through Hope BC (where Rambo First Blood was filmed).

I think I've managed 37 of the 50 states and two Canadian provinces in my driving travels.

Been in that same car life. It's not the same. The control freak in me loves to drive, but after that career, I learned to be a really great rider and copilot on road trips. Radio dj, food spotter, cool pit stop locator, map reader and navigator. I love it!
