    Hey TacoWorld,

Any word that this feature will be on future Tacos? I believe it is an "active lane keep assist" system. It is basically autopilot. Vehicle doesn't need to be out of its lane before it correctly steers itself center, which is the current system. Thanks.

    Welcome.

I read this article a few weeks back.

    https://www.economist.com/business/2018/05/19/toyota-takes-a-winding-road-to-autonomous-vehicles

Basically it says that Toyota is more focused on features like the one you are asking about - making cars safer for the human beings driving them, while other manufacturers are racing to develop full autonomous vehicles.

    Interesting times.

i have a 2017 Subaru with lane assist. It's no auto pilot. When it senses you've crossed a centerline, it will correct the steering input, by feeding in about 10% opposite. Which effectively causes you to veer towards the other side of your lane. When you go over that line, it counter steers back the other direction. So you end up ping-ponging between yellow lines for 4-5 times, then it disengages, and you veer into the lane next to you. Its weird, I don't use it. It can be turned off, so it is. Speaking of course about a Subby, not a Toyota, but in summary, it's no autopilot.

Adaptive cruise control, however...that's the bomb.

The only reason Toyota didn't put this on the Tacoma is that the Tacoma still has hydraulic steering. You can't steer by wire when there's literally no wires involved in the steering.

The wife’s ‘17 Highlander has this and it’s annoying. I usually disregard my turn signal when there is no traffic. The chime in conjunction with the automatic steering wheel input can be frustrating. You will also feel the steering wheel move left or right with no chime or warning every now and then. Almost as if the system is anticipating an unintentional lane departure. I always turn it off while driving either her car or my Taco.

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
On the Subarus the lane keep assist uses the detection of lane marker stripes. Off road/dirt -no workie. Why would you need it there anyway?
Remember -- it's called "off-road" -- that is where you supposedly WANT to be at that time

Thanks for that concrete answer. I thought everything was drive by wire.

I rented a Yukon last month that had this. I don't care for the feature. "Ping pong" is a good description.

    In layman's terms: It sucks.

People, drive your cars, stay off you phones and watch the road and forget about all the gadgets that all new cars have.

My wife's 2018 Highlander has this. It is annoying as hell. It's actually kind of scary if you don't know it's going to fight you when you want to change lanes with no blinker. I turned this off on the test drive and it hasn't been back on since. Oh and the Adaptive cruise control sucks too. even on the lowest setting it slows down way to soon

Doesn’t work off road. There is a forward facing camera that detects the lane striping. If there are none, system stays off. Also, will not activate under 32 mph.

The Tacoma is drive by wire. However it has no electric steering. Two different definitions.
