I am looking to extend my range. I do a fair bit of highway and would like to get about 500miles before stopping and filling up so looking to add about 15gallons to my capacity. Cant relocate the spare for my setup.

What have you folks done to your rigs. Is there a tank from a different car that anyone has found to fit?

That is a sweet build! More or less what I’m trying to do. Maybe i can find a smaller one for that space so i can fit the spare down there too

A common swap for 3G 4runners is to put an early ‘90s F150 19gal tank in the spare tire location. Fits perfectly between the frame rails and doesn’t hang down too low. That’s on my list of options to add as an aux tank with a transfer pump to the main tank.

FJ80 Land Cruisers (non-US spec) had an optional 2nd gas tank that was donut shaped and went above/around the spare tire. Good luck finding one, and they only hold like 7 gallons, but it’s a pretty cool use of space.

That’s pretty neat, but a 200 series LC is a much larger truck. I’d be surprised if that was anywhere close to fitting between the frame rails on a 1st gen Tacoma.

I will never forget when I saw the fuel tank
Huge/mounted upright right behind rear passenger seat backs
I specifically thought, perfect for adding range…easy fitment….like in a Cannonball Run sort of way

I’m pretty sure you have bed occupied with more essential ‘camping comfort’ stuff
Thinking inside bed would be only place
Kinda like a diesel tank on a oil field worker’s truck
    Just thinking out loud

    Thanks! That’s my truck.

I recall seeing a tire shaped aux tank with a hole in the middle so you can keep your spare in that location.

My spare lives in the camper it and it’s ALWAYS in the way.

You can use just about any tank that has the dimensions to fit in any space under or on your truck.

Yes this is what I'm trying to avoid. Can't put it in the bed because of the camper, can't put it on the tailgate because of the bikes, and the front just looks silly.

AFAIK its against pretty much every regulating body imaginable to store an active gas tank inside the cab

I think this is the route I will end up going. I just have to take measurements and find one that fits

    Again, thinking out loud
What about a RV black/gray/fresh water tank?…..under bed
Would take modifying to fit and to adapt filler hole for FP
    But
    Huge range of “shallow” sizes

I’m curious what this means since many unibody cars have the tank sitting directly under the rear seats; many with the fuel pump wiring and access hole immediately under the seat cushion. I don’t even know if the sheet metal that the seats are made out of is any thicker than the walls of a steel fuel tank and the tank sitting right under it is made of plastic.

Don’t use water storage tanks for gasoline! They are not rated for fuel storage nor thick enough to survive accidents and can split open easily.

    - it’s pricey but built to take hits. Works well in my DCSB OR, especially when we go remote camping or need the extra fuel for our RV trailer trips. I do truck and Sidekick fill up runs to a local gas station at a Rez and have discounted gas that way all the time.

I wanna keep my spare under the bed and I hate swingouts, 2x the trouble just to open my tailgate. My eventual plan for extended range is running another tank on the other side of the truck. Opposite of stock. Exhaust would have to be shortened and the passenger shock relocated behind the axle to do this. The 13.7 gal tank for the Toyota pickup is my pick so far.

I have an entire donor truck worth of parts after my frame swap so I might use that tank/fuel pump instead.
