I've been looking all over the interweb to determine the largest tire I can run on a 05-14 5 lug single cab. I am after the widest tire and tallest tire without rubbing. I want a soft ride (tall sidewall) and enough tire to keep the curb rash to a minimum on a 18x8.5 +35 wheel. I probably will run a 1.5'' spacer also. I've heard the following so far...

this is all I have confirmed. Are there any other options? 2nd gens have a big wheel well that is hard to fill

    275/40/18 10.8'' wide 26.66 tall
    215/70/15 8.5'' wide and 26.85'' tall (stock)

    Factory xrunner 18x(8?) are I think 33mm offset and run 255 45 18.
    1.5" spacers on 8.5 w/35mm? You will have 1.5" + .5" (2" more poke) than factory?

One thing to keep in mind with the base model 5-lugs is that we do not have the fender flares that every other Tacoma has. And with the DJM 3/4 drop you also have to take into account that you'll run the risk of bottoming out more than a stock height truck. Currently I run a 255/35R20 tire on 20x8.5 +38 wheels with about a 4/4 drop. I rub and/or bottom out if I'm not careful when doing turns with bumps or going up driveways too fast.

Here's a quick current shot, I'll be taking the front up a 1/4" to stop the rubbing issue. You may or may not be able to see it in the shot but the tire is about 15-20mm from flush with the outer edge of the fender right now so I would say you could get away with a 275 without the spacers, but a 1.5" spacer is going to put the tire way outside the edge of the fender. You may be better suited using a 245 or 255 if you plan to run the spacer.

    you want a soft ride?
    good suspension.

you want to avoid curb rash?
    don't hit curbs.

Tire width is determined by width.

People here drive off road Tacomas.

Disagree. It's a Tacoma. It's 2nd Gen. He belongs here as much as anyone.

You're fine here. You could make a post in the street section if you want more specialized advice, though.

I had 275/40R18 Ventus V12 EVO on my stock 18” XRunner wheels. Forgot what drop I had at the time.

What was the rim width and offset?
