Stock size. In stock load rating. Anything larger and/or heavier will effect mileage.

You could bump up to a 265/70 without much effect.

255/80/17 is your best bet if you want more height. Of course you'll lose some gas mileage, but not as much as 285. My Toyo AT3 have been great.

265/70/17 is a great size even if with a moderate lift. You'll lose a bit of gas mileage over stock, but nothing significant.

If mileage is your main priority, stock. Sounds like 265/70 is what you'll end up with. I ran that size when it was my daily driver. Went to 255s when I got a Toyota matrix as my daily and the truck became my adventure vehicle

It doesn’t work like that. Quantum mechanics doesn’t apply. It’s a continuum.

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

If there was a better tire for mileage Toyota would have used them from the factory.

That said, anything taller, wider, heavier, stronger, more aggressive or cooler looking will cost you some MPG.
The farther you go from stock the more you will lose.

Just going to throw this out there for kicks and giggles… there was a study(s) that have shown that a wider tire with lower air pressure can actually have less rolling resistance than a narrower tire with higher air pressure if the surface is rough enough. The narrow tire bounces too much and becomes inefficient was the explanation. I think the study was with bicycle tires and I can’t find it now, but no matter I’m throwing it out there for the wolves.

Not many choices in 255 size though.

255/80/17 (33”) is an awesome choice as well, but they are E rated and start at around 50 pounds.

My 255/85r16 e-load mud terrains make a measurable 1 mpg difference (17 vs 18) and a perceptible difference in acceleration, noise, and comfort. Great off road. Not so great on road. At least I didn’t need to buy new wheels and cut my truck up.

Many people seem to focus on fuel economy and forget about the other effects of “aggressive” tires.

EDIT: the 1 mpg is comparing to the goodyear wrangler a/t tire. My 2016 with all seasons got 22mpg. It’s not a apple to apple comparison though. The 2016 was an SR5 with an auto and a chin strap. The 2020 is a manual with no chin strap and a 2” lift.
