The places we went (all the cabins) we had to use 4wd to get to them. (Locked in some places on the road). I doubt 2wd could make it. There is so much of Death Valley that can be accessed with 2wd vehicles though. No problem. These particular places required 4wd though.

Very cool... I just noticed he removed his lights in front, and the skid plate seems different. Enough change to have me double check it was the same truck that got 'Baja proven' last year! :D

Can't believe I missed this thread. I'm usually down to go to DV. Most of those trails look familiar. Wish there was more of a trip report and captions for the pics. When is the next trip?
As has been noted there are tons of places to journey in DV with a prerunner. Having a 4x4 is required for areas noted. Looks like Goler Wash on the way to Geologists Cabin. Not prerunner friendly!

I'm gonna cross link this thread here:

This is rumored to be Charles Manson's old truck. AFAIK he traded it for another vehicle.

OP, Thanks for sharing your photos, they are very good and I'm delighted to view them. DV is one of my favorite places. I was last there in August 2011, when I traversed through the entire length of Saline Valley solo, on Saline Valley Road.

From your pictures it looks as though you visited South Park. I see in the photos where you had to negotiate Chicken Rock. Two years ago a jeep when overboard there. I also see Goler Canyon which pierce into the heart of the Panamint mountains. I recognize Butte Valley (probably where the wild asses were), the Geologists cabin, and the stripped butte ( I hiked it 2009.) Warm Springs in where the pool is.

I'm guessing you guys exited to Death Valley proper? (Warm Springs rd -> West Side Rd -> Badwater Rd.) Or did you guys double back through Goler Canyon?

No he's not getting out but I don't think that truck is gonna be leaving Balarat either. The residents wouldn't let one of their few relics leave. When the truck was Manson's I doubt it was "vintage" ;)

Crom I'm certain you are right on the money about the route and locations.
