Honest question, what benefit do you see in a manual vs a tunable DSG?

no benefit. Purely enjoyment and feel of still being able to throw gears and use your left foot. Non-manual (different manufacturers have different ones so won't get into names) transmissions have been faster for years and will continue to improve. Hell, Koenigsegg introduced a direct drive transmission in their new Regera that can switch between any gear at any time, not just sequentially. The manual is already outdated and has been for years, but the thrill of it is (in my opinion) always going to be greater than any automatic.

I know this wasn't directed at me but I want to answer it.

I like dual-clutch transmissions. They are essentially hydraulically actuated manuals that drip performance at every corner. Very cool indeed, unlike torque converted slush boxes. That being said, you don't get to manually manipulate the clutch with a dual-clutch. And manually manipulating the clutch is fun. And that's all there is to it.

I was gonna suggest the cool factor of a 3rd pedal as a sort of joke, but that ended up being the popular opinion lol

I'm more stoked about Freevalve. Trickling that down will allow for so much tuning flexibility that's been such a PITA for manufacturers and aftermarket performance for so long... and its so simple!

There'll be a lot of tech hopefully tricking down in the coming decades. I'm excited to see where it all goes.

Back to the yelling at clouds topic: I'm a millennial so i remember phones changing and all of a sudden there are apps and touch screens. Of course I'm all for progress and most of the automotive change that's happening is good. However...i will never give up my manual. I can't believe there may be a generation coming that won't know what one is, let alone how to drive it. They'll eventually be something more expensive to keep around, but i believe worth it. It's up to the purists and people who can afford it to keep em around. Long live combustion

I feel like we are destined to end up like the humans in the Disney movie Wall-e where we literally just float around and consume protein out of sippy cups. The question is do we let it happen? Or do we make it happen? Holding on to old technology because it is comfortable is exactly how we lose control of our future.

Manual transmissions are even dying in commercial freight trucks and motorcycles. In Formula E racing, teams are required to have a transmission, so most teams run a 2 speed gearbox.

When I told my 91 year old grandfather that mine was a 6mt, he said "there's nothing wrong with a standard shift. But then again, I guess it ain't so standard anymore."

We have a long way to go on infrastructure before I get too excited about mass migration to EVs. Think of Texas, now add a million EVs needing to charge.

Yes, I've read about this... I wonder what is involved with importing a vehicle from Canada to the US or vice versa. I would imagine the safety standards are probably the same. Maybe pay extra tax???

I had a really nice 4 door Honda Accord MT when I lived in Bahrain. I wanted to bring it back with me but that would have required installing air bags, amongst other things. A "Grey Market" vehicle. I think it would have cost me upwards of $6,000. So I sold it for a good price and bought an MT Ford Ranger when I arrived in the US...

This was back in 1999, I can only imagine what it is like now...

I do think it's a bit of a mistake by the auto manufacturers to not offer manuals in mid to upper tier trims. The market for stripper cars skews young, and that demographic largely doesn't know anything about manuals.

As far as the SR MT goes, I'm guessing the standardization of TSS had something to do with it's demise. I don't think it's a coincidence TSS became standard in 2018, the same year they axed the 5 speed.

I would agree. I could probably have sold a Subaru MT to my wife if they paired them with leather. Just silly.

Yeah, but the 3.5l still has the MT. I'm half wondering if it wasn't a sales trend?

Of course multiple factors influenced the decision. I think engineering dollars separate from the 3.5 6 MT would still be required to pair the 5 speed with TSS. The main advantage for manufacturers in offering MT in stripper models is to be able to claim a low starting MSRP for a vehicle. Maybe the 5 MT could no longer be offered for a significant enough discount?

Also the issue of offering a mt at the higher trims is allocating them as they'll be at a higher cost, when historically they are in the lower trims. Could be wrong, but there's definitely a market shift.

Edit: also ram discontinued their manual in their full size after 18. Just see this as possibly setting the direction
