    Hey folks.
Kind of curious if anyone with a later model 2nd gen (2010 and up) are still having issues with frame rust and rot. I was under my truck yesterday inspecting and hitting some of the surface rust with fluid film and was pretty happy that my frame still looks great on my 2013 after going thru 4 NE winters. Is anyone with a later model in the rust belt states having issues where they believe they will need a new frame in the near future or did toyota finally put that issue to rest on the later models?

My last frame lasted 10 years before it needed to be replaced. Now I have a 2014/2015 frame, but i imagine it'll take 8-10 years to really know if the issue has been resolved.
I also use fluid film, slight surface rust on weld points after Two maine winters.

My 2010 has plenty of surface rust underneath. From what I have read though, the points of failure will rust from the inside out so I have no idea how bad mine is. I regularly clean it off especially in winter with power washer or at least a hose with jet nozzle to knock the salt off. My wifes 2011 Pilot looks brand new, right off the showroom floor. Her sister has a 05 Jeep that looks almost rust free on the frame. I just don't get it :annoyed:

I have a 2012 and it's not terrible right now but I can tell from the spots it has that it won't make it another 10 years

My 2011 still looks great overall. We'll see how it looks in another 5 years.

Last couple of posts aren't giving me a warm fuzzy feeling. Lol. I was hoping the frame issues were resolved on the later models. I have found on my RC that the front cab mounts on the frame get loaded with sand and debris. I use a long nozzle with compressed air to blow them out spring and fall now. First time I did it I could not believe how much was in there. Check those areas. I didn't use water as I didn't want the stuff to turn to a paste in there.

This is correct. One of my customers has a first gen with 40K miles and it is BADLY rusted. Truck is mint other than the frame, makes me wish he had known about the buybacks and what not. He's quite old, I'm sure he had no idea he had the opportunity to have the issue resolved.

    Bullshit

So your saying something that rarely gets outta the garage for occasional trips will see the same amount of rust as a vehicle that drives across the country?

Wrong, rust has everything to do with miles, condition of the roads and the coating of the frame

Owner maintenance is a huge factor as well, if you don't wash your truck/frame you'll see way worse corrosion

60,000 miles and frame rusted out

If miles were THE major determining factor, I wouldn't see vehicles daily with LOW miles and tons of rust and other vehicles with LOADS of miles with no rust. We have a customer who owns a 2007 Tundra with 750,000 actual miles on the truck. There is very, very little rust on the frame. My step-dads ranger has 30,000 miles and is rusted so badly I'm fairly certain I could brake the frame with a ball-peen hammer. You are correct in saying that mileage plays a role, but road condition, frame coating, and proper maintenance seem to play a bigger role from what I have personally seen. I am located in southern IN, and I'm sure this issue is a little different everywhere.

I have never seen a technician apply a rust proof coating system properly or carefully. I get it, it's a dirty job, and who wants to do it? Most of the products that are used will only stick on a clean, prepared surface, and even then the saline, and sand from the roads is like liquid sandpaper all winter and blasts the bottom of the vehicle sometimes down to bare metal when it's driven for hours and hours at high speed. The quest for a truck that lasts forever in the snow belt where I live is futile. Sure, keep it clean, but at the end of the day it's time to recycle it and buy a new one after 10 years. Just my .02 worth.

You don't see old vehicles where I live except on the Main Street in the summer for the Summer Classic car event, or on sunny Sunday afternoons being driven by old timers like me. Those old vehicles look dangerous sagging down the roads barely making it through the turns and squeezing to stops at the coffee shops. The old muscle cars are the worst as they're driven by true believers trying to regain their lost youth.

Mine is a 2013 with 55k miles. Live in Pa with lots of road salt in the winters. Truck is a salty taco all winter. Frame looks really good. Few weld spots with spotty rust, but other than that its pretty good. Ive kept an eye on it, but it seems to be doing well.

Looks like this most of the winter.

That's good to know. I've got about the same mileage on mine and so far the frame looks real good seeing I live in NE. Like some others say, I guess time will truly tell.
