It amazes me that ya'll can't even discuss child safety and health issues without bringing up tinfoil hat level government discussion

I'll admit I'm not perfect. But I'm not going around calling people stupid all while failing basic English myself.

Horse manure? Hypothetically a person drink 3-4 beers and is over .08 BAC. They drive home and don't hit anyone or anything. What is that? A victimless crime. We already have intoxication manslaughter, vehicular homicide, etc. Why do we need another law to tax people for not hurting anyone?

The issue with making a law against smoking with kids in the car is that it doesn't fix anything. Parents would still smoke in front of their children in the privacy of their home and all of the negative side effects on the kids would still exist. If the parents don't see it as wrong then it can't be stopped. You could make all the laws you want but you cannot stop irresponsible parenting.

Everyone has there opinion on this. Mine is that it's not the governments job to tell people how to raise their children, the responsibility belongs to the families to raise their kids in a home with morals and values where they are taught right from wrong & accountability. I am a father of 2 and you could bet your ass that if my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles ect thought for a second that I was smoking / drinking with kids in the car then there would be a lynching at my house and vise versa. Therefor we do not need the government or laws to hold us accountable for bad decisions.

Lets just make a law saying you can't have kids and then you can smoke all you like!

Gubment needs to stay out of our lives.

If you want to give your kid cancer by smoking in the car so be it. The world would be a better place if we stopped "slowing down" the stupied from killing themselves off.

    Idiocracy here we come...

It would go a long way towards fixing the problem of people smoking with kids in the car.

I think it depends on the situation. If I'm sitting on a park bench and you come up and sit down beside me and light a cigarette, I'm not being a jerk by asking you to put it out or go somewhere else.
But if you're sitting on a park bench smoking a cigarette, and I come sit beside you and ask you to put it out or leave, then I'm definitely being a jerk.

Actually, that fallacy's called the Appeal to Moderation fallacy. However, you're misapplying it.
The Appeal to Moderation fallacy is as follows:
There is a choice between 1 and 3, therefore the correct answer must be 2, since it's a compromise. The problem inherent is that either 1 or 3 can be completely correct, meaning that it doesn't make sense to jump directly to 2.

I'm not stating that everything needs to be a compromise, or that the middle ground is always the best position.
    Essentially I'm saying that the answer isn't always 1, 2, or 3. Sometimes it's 1, sometimes it's 2, sometimes it's 3. Don't deal in absolutes.

I thought that mods were supposed to understand how the internet worked?

95% true statement. Only issue is that it's still not the kids fault their parents are teaching them to be stupied and every once in awhile they come away from bad parents and do just fine in life ;)

The problems is they don't die off. They just grow up to be stupid and then have more stupid offspring.

Then they rely on smart people to come up with things like health care treatments and safer items to alleviate their stupidity and then bitch when these things are expensive. Because they are too stupid to realize that being stupid is a drain on everyone else, too.

The post didn't ask the question whether or not people should smoke in a car with children. If it had, the I would expect a very short, one sided discussion. If anyone has argued in favor of it, I missed it.
That would be a post about child safety and health issues.
The post was instead about "should there be a law?". That pretty much makes it a government discussion.
As for tin foil hats, i'll refer back to my previous post regarding our social security numbers.

This is done already with people who have had DUI's, you know how they get around it? They have someone else blow into it. Not really a solution but a waste of money and I don't feel like paying the extra $$ to have one installed because of some A-hole and his poor lack of judgement.

10% of a problem solved is better than no percent. Especially if it only affects the people causing the problems.

    The better coast
    Why point out california? :p

I think they should make it illegal in all public areas. If you want to smoke do it in the confines of your own private home (or private business that allows it) where only the smoker (or others who voluntarily go into a business that allows smoking) will receive the side effects, go for it.

If you want to smoke in public where you put others, who dont smoke, at risk for health problems, that is a no for me.

As far as smoking with a child in the car, I am all for a law making it illegal.

I think around here they have cameras in the car that takes your picture when you blow. As far as judgement is concerned too many people let alcohol take away their judgement.

People are worried about second hand smoke killing other peoples kids meanwhile their own kids are probably obese fat asses with ADHD and on the fast track to getting addicted to their parents prescription drugs.

I think we should regulate everything. No salt, fat, smoke, preservatives, booze, drugs, sex.... Once we have a law for everything we will all live in a utopia.

Worry about yourself and your own impact on others, not what some POS does to his kid in his car.

Sigh. Fine. That specific example is a victimless crime, when viewed individually. But the thousands of times every year that it's repeated where somebody is killed, injured, or has a monetary expense because of it are not victimless crimes.

So what about what he does to his kid in his house?
Or what about what he does to his kid in his bedroom?

    Where do you start worrying?
