My scumbag sister in law smoked for her whole pregnancy, then told her family that her doctor told her not to stop because it might upset the baby. Not sure if that holds any water medically, I don't really care if it does either, stupid bitch should know better. If she could be arrested for being a selfish idiot then I'd report her myself. Alas, though I'll take "illegal to smoke with child in a car" as a consolation prize against darwinism. Unfortunately this helps me cope with her horrible character traits and still leaves her son high and dry.

Child abuse includes an endless supply of fat, sugar, meth, or cigarette smoke. All should be corrected in the future lest we are all doomed

No, they are not my children. However my children have to grow up around them, as well as my grandchildren. Should we all just but out of everything that happens in the world and keep to ourselves? Good luck with ANY success on that. It is called Anarchy, and it never works. Besides, I, unlike some people, actually DO care about others in this world. ESPECIALLY those who are unable to protect themselves. Sure, a young adult, teenager can make a conscious decision to tell their parents that they do not want to ride in the car with them smoking. Maybe their parents will listen. But what about the infants and toddlers who do not have a voice to speak up? Should we, as a society, just say "screw it, let them all suffer?" Since I don't know your religious beliefs, I can't say "Very Christian of you", with any force, but you get the meaning behind it. Do you have children? Would you like someone else smoking around them?

I am agreeing a lot with that statement.

I missed this one. And my response to that is the same for any other crime out there. If the lower class demographic is willing to break the law, then that is their problem. Just because they are a lower income, or less educated demographic, does not exclude them from the law. If the law says don't smoke with a child in the car, then simple: Don't smoke with a child in the car. It doesn't add a burden to them unless they CHOOSE to violate the law and HAVE that burden. It is called being responsible.

Some people get it (probably non-smokers) and I'm sure a few don't (probably smokers). So from one non-dumbass to another...Thanks! :D

In theory, that's great. Except after your society has already spent centuries cultivating habits and addictions, it's not so simple.

It's like Jim Crow laws which disenfranchised a person if they could not read the Constitution in English or write their name. It basically makes the undereducated automatic criminals.

It is not theory. I see low income families around here all the time with cell phones and internet. (and we are one of the poorest counties in the US) Ignorance is not an excuse for breaking the law.

I agree there are dangers such as open flames, getting burned, maybe even hot grease/drippings, but who the hell smokes meat while they're driving?

Yes, ignorance is not an excuse for breaking the law. But some laws have been enacted solely to keep a certain class of people subjugated - generally the lower-income/lower-educated.

Ultimately, smoking is a choice (unless you're trapped in a car with a smoking adult) so it would eventually come to be widely accepted. But initially, the financial hurdle would be much greater to overcome for the lower class due to an established culture.

I am for freedom of the people, so I am almost always against a government being able to tell a person what to do. Whether or not I agree with what a person is doing or not. I simply can't be for freedom, only when it benefits me yet willing to remove someone else's. However in this case I agree that it should be a law, I'm allergic to smoke. It has always been an issue with people smoking when I was a small child and could not voice the reason why my eyes were burning so much or how it was difficult for me to breath. This was not done by my parents as we are not a family of smokers. But with friends parents or out eating. So this would indeed benefit children seeing as we are as you stated a nation of people that have to be told what to do. Enforcement will however be a different story.

Actually yes I did try to find numbers then for how much the state Medicaid / Medicare system spends on treating Tobacco related diseases. Someone in the discussion we were having also postulated the same as you have. Unfortunately DHSS ( Department of Health And Social Services ) only has estimates not hard numbers. They also admitted to a +/- of 20 Something percent error rate even on their estimate. By the same token the 38 Million is 3.2% of the states income http://taxfoundation.org/sites/taxf...s-a-percentage-of-state-local-rev-(large).png Look At Delaware. This is about individual choice what a parent chooses to do around their children which is what the poll is about not adults. I can make the same argument note the your bold statement now I will reword it and add a word which by rights should also be in your bolded statement too. "The less people exposed Alcohol then the less chance of people who suffer Alcohol related disease and or death. Though as I said in this case the question is should it be made a law for parents / adults not to smoke with a child in the car. I will maintain it is the parents choice to do the right thing or the wrong thing sadly they do not give common sense tests to people who want to have children. You can not legislate common sense.
