I've never had to deal with this, but it's scary. Luckily I work for family so I am likely to not get laid off...but the threat is still there. I am an electrician and the building has almost come to a stand-still. We are letting 3 guys go (30 man shop) this week and told a couple of the old timers to start looking into early retirement.

You always hear of lay-offs but don't really think about them until your work partner is laid off. I hung out with one guy outside of work and have been working daily with the other one for the last couple of months.

It just sucks to see your friends lose their jobs and that you likely won't see them ever again.

I hope this economy picks up so we can keep working.

My company is huge but they do layoffs almost yearly no matter what the economy is. They're always downsizing. If you're 50 years old - you can almost expect to see early retirement. If you're lower management, you're within the target range to ge laid off. Within the past 3 years - layoffs and restructuring have huge. I'm an hourly craft person and probably the safest place to be - but nobody is safe. If you're not up to par in terms of performance, they'll find any excuse to let you go or demote you.

I know what you mean. Work is getting real slow. The job I'm on has been one big pain in the balls, it's going to end up in court when all is said and done, but on Monday, during a meeting the VP said we may do the next work area here. I hope to god my ass is long gone if they do bid on it.

Yup, I got laid off last week. Nobody has money to support businesses anymore, they don't take money in they can't pay it out.

I thought the only things down here that were steady were horse farms and medical, but I just heard from a kid working at Publix that his father parked his horse trailer in a feed store parking lot, when he came out someone had tied four horses to it, left a note saying "please take good care of them". So I guess it's down to just medical here. EMTs in ambulances make $8.50 an hour, there's so many of them.

I had 2 of my co-workers get laid off yesterday. They said they would keep me on for a while. But i am inside now training on microstation. Its a huge change for me and a huge pay cut. but its still beats unemployment for now.

Wow that really rough....I havent heard too much about it up here, but with the price of oil so low, I can only imagine the layoffs will be starting.

There isn't much in the way of jobs to relocate to either.

I have been employed with a medical equipment since 2002 and I just got laid off, my last day will be Dec 12. Not many engineering opportunities out here.

I think our government is going to have to go into serious defecit spending to keep our economy afloat. Meanwhile China just announced their own huge stimulus package the other day. Their growth rate has slowed down from 9% to 7% . . .

my boyfriend's job is almost done which means he's going to be laid off pretty soon. it sucks but at least he's part of the union so he doesn't have to worry about finding another job on his own.

i feel bad for everyone getting laid off that have families to support

Well I am lucky, right now my company is predicting growth for 2009. We have hired 5 people in the last month in my office alone and are looking to hire more still. The environmental business still seems to be doing allright!

our union is a bit bigger than out by you...and i think we are being hit harder than cali as far as work shortage :( usually we have several hundred out of work (most just dont want to work). There's supposed to be 2000 off by the end of the month.
