I'm not a betting man, but I'd say you would still have to check the play with the wheels hanging off the ground. Otherwise, in order to tell if its loose you'd have to find some way to push it down, and not up. With the wheel hanging down, it's resting at the bottom of the LBJ, so you can lift up on the LBJ or the wheel itself to check for play. if it's on the ground, it'll be as far up as it can go, resting at the very top of its travel, so you can't really check it. If that makes any sense. Had to watch the vids again to make sure.

Posts like that scare the shit out of me. My truck has a bit over 318k miles. I have original LBJ in my truck, meaning they were installed in Fremont factory in 1995. I had them checked by four independent places (Toyota service in Elk Grove, American Tires shop, Wheel alignment place and finally Toyota service on Poland). All gave me green light. I'm checking them regularly and they are still like new. How much longer can they go? I have a spare OEM set on the shelf waiting to be installed, but only after I will see my original start going bad.

I suspect that my truck was built as a demo model using all hand picked the best parts of the lot

For me, LBJ's are like a maintenance item. With 200,000 miles on your original ones, I'd change them out even if they feel o.k. just to be safe. It's an easy enough job. No use tempting fate. And especially with LBJ's, OEM is the only way to go!

I'm curious about the Napa axles vs cvj's. I need to do both my fronts, I would like all the opinions I can get. Not really interested in rebooting my oems.

Good question. I am curious about this, too.

I'd recommend an alignment after any ball joint replacement but that's just my opinion.

I paid about $130 for the pair for my 2003. Ordered them from Camelback Toyota. I think there is TacomaWorld discount code for Camelback, so you may be able to get them cheaper. Also, you should get an alignment after any front suspension work.

If the ball joint was loose when they did the last alignment than you would need to get another one. If it was solid before it loosened up you should be okay.

Mine tested solid and had no play right before they failed. I recommend changing every 100k miles.

I just ordered mine this morning, from Camelback and they were $220 for both including bolts.

Why is everyone so scared of using anything other than OEM? LOL get a grip guys, I'm willing to bet 99% of people with premature failures had an underlying cause

Yeah, wear. Do some searching on here, there are posts with cross-sections of the LBJ's showing exactly why OEM are better and last longer.

I literally had an alignment right before they failed. They said all ball joints and tie rods were solid.

I've read a bunch of them and yet to see any evidence to actually support this, what i have seen is a ton of regurgitated folk lore
