Exactly. They have failed when no wear to the boots and no noticeable movement where other vehicles you can lift up and see they are super loose but they never fail. I drove a bronco on loose LBJ's when I was a kid for years and never had an issue.

    I see Mercury:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3_aJxyGY4I

    Dodge

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHt8iKZcAxE

any almost every other brand. In some cars like I see in 5th gen 4Runner LBJ works by pushing ball into the socket by the weight of the car. 1st gen Tacoma weight of the car is puling the ball out of the socket. On the top of that there is no safety feature preventing the ball from disconnecting completely (in 4Runner the ball can't disconnect because it will hit CV joint). So the design for 1st gen Tacoma would cause quite violent result if LBJ fails. But regardless of the design the ball joint do fail for all brands if not replaced when they wear out.

Yeah you will see one or two other vehicles with ball joint failures compared to 100 toyotas. Google proves it.

Then I wonder why do you even bother with Toyota. Buy Ford, not many pictures of F150 with broken LBJ on Google :crapstorm:

Here is another video showing bad LBJ. Easy DIY test - this one is actually shot to death, but the lady seems very happy o_O

Check with Conicelli Toyota as well. I got them cheaper from there, even after I applied the TW discount on Camelback. It may depend on your location though... shipping and everything could effect your final price.

People have had failures on OEM BJ's too. Wasn't there a recall to address that? :notsure:

I'm not sure double the price is "cheap" either...

Sure, if you googled "Tacoma LBJ failure" you'll get tons of hits. That's what google does, it find things on the internet that you searched for. It's not going to also show you "Tacoma LBJs and didn't fail and are doing just fine." (mostly because people generally don't post about that - they only post when something goes wrong)

It's called confirmation bias. Search for something. Find it. Must happen all the time, to everyone.

The plural of anecdote is not "data".

The ONLY way to know for sure is to compile a list of the number of Tacoma LBJs sold in America, and compare that to the number of people posting about failures.

No google "LBJ failure". Do not add any manufacture name. 99% of images will all be toyota and lexus.

The OEM failures were mostly due to a run of defective LBJs on top of an already poor design. I'm sure other manufacturer's vehicles have had an LBJ fail from time to time but 1st gens are/were well known for it because of the design flaw (and recall for a certain model years).

Not to mention, with how reliable 1st gens are you see a lot of them still on the road today...long term wear and tear items like LBJs are naturally going to become an issue for those that ignore the warning signs or are just plain unlucky.

    Search for whatever you want.

That could just mean people who own Toyotas are more likely to afford an internet connection and can therefore post about it, or Totota owners are more likely to be upset about it, given their otherwise pretty stellar reliability records, or any number of other factors.

It's still a case of confirmation bias, or just a misunderstanding of statistics when you search for something, find it, then assume that's what always happens. Like I said, you need a clearer understanding of the statistics to really make that call.

You know thats not true. People post issues when they fail. And more posts are from toyotas. I really dont even know what we are arguing anymore.

Buy OEMs, they dont cost much more. They are worth the extra cost. As many people have had failures on aftermarkets within 20k miles.
