Leaf pack only?

New to Tacos and the many options available... so I'm looking for some opinions.

My '19 OR will stay stock, except sliders, a shell, cab roof rack and 255/85/16s. When going off road I will put some stuff in the bed, so it will probably get a little heavy. The off-roading I'll be doing won't be anything too technical.

My question is: can I get away with replacing the leaf pack only and leaving the rest stock?

I know better shocks would be ideal, I had the whole deal on my Wrangler, but now I don't want to do anything that I don't have to. It will be 100% function over form.

Can the stock shocks deal with the added weight, or will they struggle?

I would say leave it stock and find out yourself. Adding a leaf makes the ride rough for most so you trade off daily driving for capacity in the rear. The rear sits high on Tacomas in anticipation of load, so weight just levels it out.

Should be fine. Wouldn't sweat it.

I'm not interested in lift, I'm interested in making the rear stronger. I don't know... can I replace the leaf pack without adding height? Probably not... If not, I want to go with whatever adds the least lift.

If I go with a leaf pack that makes it stronger, but also lifts it a little, what kind of shocks should I be looking for?

This is probably the thread that goes against the current... how to make it capable without adding any lift, or too much lift...

If you add weight, you can add / change leafpack and not increase height. But most are designed for lift as that’s the Tacoma customer base, so you be going custom and not the usual companies (which wouldn’t be a bad thing). But, you can also add helper bump stops or air bags, neither will increase height and both will allow you to adjust for the weight. So best option (as always) would be to add all the weight you want, then see if you need any help in the spring department, then assess the options depending on how much you need.

Stock leaf pack with an AAL (and 5100s) is an easy affordable upgrade and you can keep the overload in.

Just towed ~ 4000lbs pretty easy

A good leaf spring shop can put together a pack for you based on your added weight. Will compromise The ride a little bit when driving light

    Thanks for all the suggestions!

It looks like my options are:
    1. sumo springs.
    2. AAL + 5100s
    3. custom leaf pack

I'm tempted to go with option 2. I don't need to drop the diff for that, right?

If that turns out not to be enough at times, I could add the sumo springs.

I have that same set up and like it except for when Im flying through speed bumps. The back does “bump” a good deal.

Quite stiff, I’m on the pavement a lot, so that’s what I wanted.

A three leaf progressive pack with that amount of weight added won’t provide much lift but will keep the rear end from sagging or being stiff like a single leaf or Sumo springs.

After all the reading I did here, I didn't even know progressive leafs existed. It looks like that's another option. So far I think I like it the best. A progressive pack, and if not enough, sumo springs.

    Not enough to list
OME Medium duty springs. I also added larger Bump stops from wheelers along with the ubolt flip kit. I have the back packed to the top and back seat with luggage and all the other stuff you see for my cross country trip. I did change the springs to 5160s, idk how or if that helped. Stock suspension was way to soft and the ass would sag a lot.

I am a minimalist and mostly want to keep my truck lightweight and fuel efficient. If I didn’t feel the stock Offroad shocks were terrible I wouldn’t have touched them. However, with any sort of weight in the back, on any sort of rough road, they just got red hot, faded
out, and I was smacking my bump stops.

5100s were a perfect upgrade for me and I feel they improved the on-road manners as well. I also put in an adaleaf and I’m pretty sure in done.

OEM springs on front. Truck has about 1.5” of lift and factory rake has been maintained.

My set-up is similar, with about 250-500 lbs in the bed over the stock weight. I recently installed a Roadmaster Active Suspension. https://activesuspension.com/ . The spring tension is adjustable...they claim between 25-40% over stock stiffness. At the 25% setting I was still hitting the bump stops off road. I just increased the tension to the max and the verdict is still out. If it's still not adequate I'm planning to swap in the Dakar medium or heavy duty leafs. I didn't even consider Sumo's or air bags because my load is pretty much constant and I wanted a permanent fix.

That's another interesting option I wasn't aware of... Every couple of hours I change my mind now. LOL

Is it possible to put on 5100's and set both front and rear to 0", and thus have no lift, but better shocks overall? That, plus the active suspension.
