As I'm sure you all know there's a recall on toyota tacoma leaf springs and has been for over a year with no remedies yet. My springs have broken twice. The dealership just blows it off when I ask them about a fix. At the moment I have them welded together. Anyone have any comments or similar situations ?

    Welded together? o_O

Do you have the TSB 3 leaf pack? Or are you still running the 2 leaf? Are you flexing them out, towing or overloading your truck? If you have the 3 leafs and they broke, I would upgrade to some better aftermarket springs.

I don't ever pull anything with my truck normally. I would like to upgrade. Toyota needs to fix them it's a faulty product from the company.

It's my understanding Toyota is replacing them now when they are replacing frames.

If you have broken leafs, it can be a very real safety issue, take it to another dealer. Since Toyota pays, there's no reason for the dealer not to repair them. Seldom dose a company do a voluntary recall, they are usually forced to (by the Gov.) and it is extremely costly. They are most likely replacing them on a as needed basis.

    Call Toyota corporate.
You will get a fix before others in line.

New to the forum but had to say I just took my 2008 TRD Quad Cab in for the spring recall today. No hassle what so ever from the dealership, they said this has been a very common problem. Was told they had to order parts and should expect to have it back in a week or so. They are replacing both spring packs and shackles and I was told this was a temporary repair and once Toyota comes up with a remedy or 'fix' I would need to bring the truck back in to have it done all over again. Apparently the new packs they are installing this time are the same crap it had new from the factory and not expected to last. Meanwhile they didn't have a loaner car so had to get Hertz to bring a rental in, a Chevy Spark of all things! Seems this is all they had left to rent so I will have to make due until a bigger vehicle comes available.
Broken springs on the Tacoma definitely could explain the truck bottoming out on the slightest bump with no load in it. Have a first Gen 2000 Tundra that needed helper springs on it as well, they are not designed for loads.
Any one else have any experience with the spring replacement recall?
Thanks for allowing me to rant.

Mine broke too. Took it into a dealer. The "Fix" isn't ready yet so they replaced mine with a set of OEMs. Told me when Toyota decides on a real fix, I'll need to bring it back for that. Cost: 0.00.

Welding my leaf spring isn't very safe, but it beats riding around with a broken one lol. I'll call again tomorrow. My boss told me to send the dealership an "official letter" and tell them if my problem is not resolved legal action will be taken.

Unless it's under warranty, the dealership won't care about "legal action". Toyota might where they are the ones backing the recall - someday. For now, make an appointment with the service manager and show him/her the damage. Bring a copy of the recall note with you in case he needs a mind refresh. Where Toyota is picking up the tab, the dealer should be cooperative. If you go in with a chip on your shoulder, you will only make it harder on yourself.

Which is why probably why they will put on OEM packs if you break yours until they resolve this. That and avoid a court case if the gas tank is punctured and ends up in an explosion. Thinking leafs are cheaper.

Picked up my 2008 Taco today with the new OEM packs installed, ride is so much better, makes me think maybe they were broken longer than I was led to believe. Bought it used 1 yr ago and the ride has been a bit rough, bottoming out on the least bumps even with no load. Truck was in for oil change and service in May and had them check the springs and frame at that time. They scheduled me for the undercoating campaign and said the springs were okay. Had the undercoating done in June and still no broken springs according to the dealership. Then recently noticed an odd rattle noise in the rear and I found the heavy short leaf had broken and was sitting at an angle ready to puncture the rear tire. Then they couldn't dispute there was a broken spring. Took it in on Monday and got it back today, new springs Left & Right, asked the service rep what will happen when Toyota comes up with a 'fix' and he stumbled around a little saying these may be the 'fix'. Anyway it is a lot nicer to drive now and it didn't cost me a thing. They should last at least until I get the truck paid for...I hope.

I called them yesterday and told them i was finally fed up with calling them every month for a year and a half. They were apologetic, said they would have y parts Monday morning. Have am appointment then to get them replaced. Hopefully it is nothing like last time

Forgot to mention that the new spring packs they installed last week were 4 leaf springs, the original setup had 3 leafs. Never understood or could get an answer from the dealership why a TRD Off Road version would have the light 3 leaf spring setup. Any way it is riding like it should now and I am very satisfied with the work the dealer did. Now we wait to see if the airbag is under recall, or some other faulty necessary parts that need to be replaced.

I gotta laugh at Toyota's "can't find a supplier" story. Leaf springs have got to be one of the most low tech, high volume parts found in trucks today. The basic design has been around for more than a century. I wonder if spring manufacturers don't like the three/four flat leaf design, and don't want to make it.
