I have an 09 tacoma and I know my leafs had the recall, but im wondering if it was all the 2nd gens that had the problem. Im also wondering what year they put out the recall and started fixing them.

Following this as I had one on my 09... got the notice in the mail back in late 2015. The original recall didn't come with a rememdy and I was relocating overseas with my truck. Once I got to Belgium, they came out with the remedy (maybe mid to late 2016) and for the life of me, I cannot find that damn recall notice. The only Toyota dealer that'll honor US recall work is in Germany and they said they can't see the recall in the system SSOOOOO... If anyone happens to have their remedy recall paperwork and can post the recall number, please do!

I had gotten a notice for my 09 and it said to bring in for inspection and replacement would be determined at the point. I already installed a 3 leaf aal so I feel pretty good about how the factory leafs are supported by the aal. I wouldn’t let them put even crappier springs in mine and if they did they most likely wouldn’t reinstall the aal. If I feel like what I have is on the verge of failing then I’ll buy and aftermarket set. I wouldn’t waste my time if I were you. I hear a lot of guys saying their trucks sit way lower and way uneven too.

Yeah iv been researching. The recall replacement was done before i bought the trucks but im gonna put in the leaf packs. Ima put in something like this https://www.generalspringkc.com/product_p/90-297hd.htm
These stock springs bottom out with nothing but leer shell on a short bed. @SoraTaco maybe think about this instead of tracking down recall stuff

    I appreciate it!
Thanks for the info! Maybe I will do something like this as my window to get this done before driving cross country is coming to a close lol.

The recall has nothing to do with load carrying capacity or metallurgy. It has to do with what happens to the components of the leaf pack WHEN a leaf breaks off.

The pre-recall springs are either 3 or 4 leaf. The replacement springs are nearly identical and can be either 3 or 4 leaf, depending on which was on the vehicle at the time.

The determination of whether the vehicle qualifies for the recall is by the number of leaf retention CLIPS are installed.

If you have a 3 leaf spring pack and it has FEWER THAN 4 CLIPS, then it is covered by the recall.
If you have a 4 leaf spring pack and it has FEWER THAN 6 CLIPS, then it is covered by the recall.

It comes down to this; when a leaf breaks, if there aren't enough clips there to keep it aligned with the rest of the pack, then it could shift out from the pack and rip into something, like a tire, brake line, or worse, the GAS TANK. Any one of which could potentially lead to you becoming DEAD.

Toyota still wants to SELL you new springs, but does NOT want you to become dead, because if you're dead, you can't buy new springs.

That's how it was explained to me when I talked to the dealer in Germany. The dealer in Illinois told me they had an issue with the leafs snapping and less so much the issue with what happens when they snap. The differences in their reasoning for the recall caught me off guard at first but as Dex__43 mentioned, I'll just replace them as a whole once I get to Italy. Main concern was making sure all was well for the trip. Not worried anymore so, I'll mess with it later :)

Had mine replace on my 07 about 18 months ago under the recall. No broken leaves but sagging from multiply trips from gravel yard.

If still looking, Paperwork says was done per E02 Recall.
