Leak from oil filter?

So I noticed leaking... Traced it back up to the oil filter, 95% sure. It's almost like the seal is no good on the filter. Anyone have this happen before? It's kinda dark so I plan to look again tomorrow, but thought if throw it out there tonight... Is it safe to unscrew/reseat oils filter with oil full? I'd rather not do an oil change at this time.

 

get a quart of oil, also buy a filter, I think you know the rest.

Ok so I don't need to do the full 5.5 qt change... Hats not so bad. I keep an extra few quarts for the trail, so I should be ok. Thanks!

 

I keep an extra filter too, no need to go to store. I'll update if it fixes my prob. Need to clean skid anyways...

 

I purchased my 04 TRD with a blown up 3.4L because the previous owner ignored a oil leak, and it was just a loose oil filter. The bed of the truck was full of empty oil containers. It's a shame because it only had 147k on it.

 

Did you try an tighten it up. If its loose then you can do a oil and filter change in the future.

 

I tried tightening, seemed on there pretty good. Checked my oil level and everything seems ok for the moment. Will try changing filter tonight and report back.

 

Not a bad gasket leak like I had. Changed the oil, started her up and the whole engine compartment was sprayed. It was an old new filter

 

There is a pretty good amount of oil leaking... Seems to have accelerated over time. Made it hard to track down origin.

 

Usually it is a either a bad gasket, no gasket, two gaskets or a loose gasket...the filter RARELY leak...

I'm chalking this up to cheap napa filters... OEM for me from now on. I looked at them side by side and the napa gold filter looks and feels cheaper.

I'll post up if it continues.

 

The NAPA gold is actually a WIX, 51348...or a NAPA 1348, and those are normally good filters, I buy the buy the case...

 

Just bought new OEM filters off ebay.
Came with clear plastic gasket seals.
Brand new at $4.50 ea shipped.

I'll have to check that out. I heard good things about the napa unit too... Maybe I just got unlucky - it was the first used of three I purchased.

Napa Gold for life. Using those on a old 2200hp $85K Gene Fulton Nitrous Pro Mod motor using Brad Penn 50wt Racing, with 75 PSI at the stripe. No problems 4 years running. Recommended by Gene.

Don't count them out just yet. The only problem I had was a oil filter seal that stuck to the mount. New filter went on and effectively created a leak point trying to double seal the filter. Hit the key and I had a gusher. Always check to make sure the old oil seal comes off with the old filter when changing.

I Buy them by the case also.

Not putting oil on the gasket prior to install can also produce leaks.

 

I always put oil on gasket but good thought, that is truth.

 

oil filters leak pretty easily. super easy to over tighten/under tighten them
