Right, tapping into the like 1% of US drivers that want manual would just end all competition.

Did someone say cab spoiler? Wonder how much equity is worth tossing out the window so I can trade for a new one with cab spoiler? Haha

$450 increase isn't the added price of the safety stuff, most of that stuff is pretty cheap. But as far as build costs go, I imagine the wages of all the workers went up at least 1%, if not 3% from 2015 to 2016. Inflation, costs of materials, salary adjustments, employee insurance (Obamacare), etc. If they wanted to keep the same margins, they would have probably had to increase a lot more than that.

I think they're still foolishly believing they have the midsize market monopolized. Give it a few more years of GM taking conquest sales, and god help them if/when the Ranger comes back to the US, and I expect them to really step it up and make some big changes.

However, the flip side of that coin is that even the nicer Toyota cars haven't really been anything to write home about in terms of bleeding edge tech. Mother in law got a loaded Avalon a few years ago and it had *just* gotten some comfort features that my 2011 GTI had. So maybe they just don't care. Hard to get in the head of a Toyota exec, really. They're the opposite of Ford- truck sales aren't what's really driving their business. It's all those corollas/camrys/rav 4s that new college grads are buying. The boring cars they sell to people who don't care about cars and just want something they perceive as 'reliable'.

Is TSS going to be an option? I was not under the impression it was. The full TSS suite is not "pretty cheap" but it's likely the Tacoma will not get the full suite. Afaik which TSS feature it's getting have yet to be confirmed. Either way it won't be for free.

TSS will not be an option, it will standard across the model and eventually all toyota's.

now if you are talking about GST/SET "TSS" that is an option package that includes different rims and extra fluff.

As I thought. So it's reasonable to say that a model wide increase in price would in part be paying for the TSS features - the $450 mentioned earlier. That's not bad if they include all the TSS features.

TSS only includes the basic safety stuff. RCTA and BSM isnt included. that is usually part of a package or as an option for the model.

TSS only includes : Pre Collision Sysytem, Lane Departure, Auto High Beams, Dyanmic Radar Cruise Control, Pre Collision w/ Pedestrian Detection.

here is the Toyota Fleet document on TSS.

Right but not all cars get all of the features. They mix and match.

the document i uploaded shows which vehicles get what. there is 2 versions of TSS, TSS-C (compacts) and TSS-P (mid sized, large and premium vehicles).

compacts dont get radar cruise control, pre collision with pedestrian, and the steering assist for lane departure, while the TSS-P gets all of them.

edit : i guess they changed things up and that document hasnt been updated. but the document does give some insight on how the different systems work in a nutshell.

edit 2 : the pdf shows what settings can be changed for each system.

I see. Surprised it's getting all of it with such a small base price increase. Seems like Toyota would take a bath in that case but I suppose they playing the safety game which is probably more lucrative long term. Thanks for posting the document.

the link to the toyota website is more up to date than that document on which models get what, but the document has more detail on how each system works and speed cutoffs, requirements to engage, features and biggie, what can/cannot be turned off/on and sensitivity adjustments.

If the price goes up only marginally with the new features, I wonder if they'll "deal" on the '18's the way they have on the '17's. I was looking, but certainly not intent on buying, but I just couldn't resist the price I negotiated on my SR DCSB. I'm kind of glad I went with the '17. I'm a fan of simplicity and utility, and don't need a bunch of electronic bells and whistles that can be problematic as the vehicle ages. Give me basic features and manual A/C controls, and I'm fine.

Also, I'll wait to see Calvary Blue in person on the truck. It may look better than anyone imagines.

The Tacoma basically does still have the midsize market monopolized, just look at the sales figures.

The Tacoma comes pretty damn close to outselling the #2, #3, and #4 midsize pickups COMBINED.

    http://www.tfltruck.com/2017/07/45078/

I'm sure Toyota is terrified of the Ranger coming back, they've never had to face that steep competition before.....

People said the same thing when the Colorado/Canyon were redesigned. I'm betting the Ranger picks off more current or prospective Colorado/Canyon owners than Tacoma owners.
