Leaking spotted around the starter?

Hello TW, i was under the truck yesterday and i noticed some wet spots that appeared to be oil extruding from where the starter sits. Is this normal/should i take it in. I couldn't find any other threads on it, i appreciate your guys' insight.

 

Is it coolant running down from the top somewhere? Doesn't look like oil.

 

Leaking timing cover?

 

time to use some automotive light dye. stuff works wonders. they make it for coolant and engine oil and do one at a time. I would start with coolant because its easiest

 

If this was on the passenger side, I'd say the infamous timing cover leak. Possibly coolant? It's new, I'd let the dealer figure it out.

 

Maybe a rear main seal.

Take it back to the dealer. A leak on something that new isn't something you'll want to tackle.

Get to dealer, ask for warranty

 

An update for those of you who are still following, I was under the truck and I've come to realise that this might be in fact carwash soap that accumulated once it dripped down and was initially sprayed thru the wheel wells in the drive-thru car wash. I did touch it with my fingers and it did feel like soap. I made the connection when i saw earlier some other parts of the undercarriage (which were also exposed to the soap but not washed because the water did not reach) also had a similar appearance and was confirmed soap.

 

Example, rear wheel well. No reason for oil to spray like this so must be unwashed soap. Found all over my rear axle on the passenger side too (where the fuel tank doesn't block it)

I doubt it’s anything. I think we get so caught up at the slightest thing that may be going wrong when really it’s nothing, because we spend so much of our hard earned money on these things.

But the taste test would surely tell you.
