Hey Crew - Love this website and have lots of respect for everyone's great comments! I find myself perusing for info quite often. I just joined today to seek some feedback on an issue I was just advised of:

My 10.5 year old Taco TRD Off Road (I'm the original owner) is in for frame recall/replacement right now and I was cautioned about a leak in the timing cover gasket ("TCG"), which I understand a TSB was issued for a handful+ of years ago. I've noticed a very small amount of oil on the floor of my garage 2-3 times in the past 3-4 years, so, it's clearly not a perpetual leaker, just occasional/very rare drips. Quote to replace the TCG is about $1750, in addition to about $1750 worth of more pressing recommendations.

The various recommendations based on inspection findings were basically two-tiered: more pressing/recommend replacing NOW, or, merely cautionary recommendation. The TCG replacement fell into the lesser of the two, merely a caution.

Question: Would you address the leaky TCG now w/the $1750 fix, or let it go?

    Thanks in advance!

Yeah,it just reinforces the notion that one should check your oil on a regular basis. My 05 gasket leaks and has been leaking for a long time and the worst I’ve ever had to refill is about 1/2 quart in a span of about 4 months.

I should qualify that I am requesting a recommendation not due to the need to buy oil or top it off, I am requesting a recommendation on whether to pursue a repair if this type of issue leaves me at a a high risk of further/more extensive engine damage.

Depends how much the leak is. If its seeping and you get one drop every few days on the ground I would leave it alone. Anything more than that I would get it fixed. Leaks are annoying and I try to fix any leaks on my vehicles quickly.

I seriously doubt any legit mechanic would charge 1/2 of $1750 for this repair. Follow the path thru the FSM - it's a hell of a lot of work.

Sounds Like one of the seals(crank shaft or cam are leaking). How many miles are on this truck?. And are you planning on keeping it? It makes sense to replace the chain, tensioner, seals and water pump while your replacing the defective seal. What the heck your into surgery already might as well do it right. It’s your call.
