Thanks for this thread. After getting the first two oil changes for free, I was ready to do my own. I bought the aluminum housing per this thread. Of course trying to take the old plastic one off, I had to use a breaker bar cause it was so tight from the dealer! I bought the Motivx MX2320 tool to remove it. That tool, like others, locks into the opposing tabs on the housing's sides to pry it off. Those little plastic tabs couldn't handle the pressure and one broke off all the way thru the housing causing a hole. Good thing I had the replacement housing. I think the AST tool in post #6 just uses the multiple facets at the bottom of the plastic housing where it may be a bit stronger but it also may strip out easier there too. Now that I have the aluminum housing, my tool should work fine for the future but may not be the best for the overtightened plastic condition...

Thanks for reminding me that I need to change my filter. Changed the oil a few weeks ago and couldn't get the cap off cause the dang dealership gorilla'd it on.

i just ordered the housing and wrench. good reviews and price. Im getting close to 3000 so I think I will change it or at least as it gets close to 5000 i will then change every 5000 miles. I also have an oil extractor to which I hope works because it makes changing oil non messy and easy....can have the oil being sucked out while changing filter and cut down on time. I do the wifes Pacifica in under 10 min

Guaranteed the dealer never changed the filter. It was on like that from the factory.

    just ordered-

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XTAGHU0/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

that's the motix tools one. I am going to keep my plastic housing there for now. I really do not want to change it to aluminum as there isn't one yet listed for a 2019. once dorman comes out with one for the 2019- probably just the same one as for the 2017, then i will go that route. 1st oil change coming up at 1000 miles. I will do myself obviously. First time using these kinds of filters though....

I wish they would stop making so many parts out of plastic.

The same for can filters. Never understood why people don't just hand tighten them, they use a tool to put torque on it. The only time I've used a tool to take it off was when I first got my Tacomas and my Yaris.

    FWIW:

    1. I find the filter cap is always on tight. When I change the oil, I always need more force to get it off than I used putting it on the last time.

    2. I use a Snap On tool for this:
    https://store.snapon.com/New-Produc...xus-reg-Vehicles-Blue-Point-reg--P890277.aspx
I know this says 4 cylinder, but it works on my 2016 V6 SR5. It also worked on a buddy's 2018 V6 TRD OR.

    3. I use the tool and slowly but firmly get the cap off with a breaker bar.

    4. All of this said I have an aluminum cap ready to go in case the plastic one breaks.

any warranty implications on using a metal cap? the one being used it seems isn't listing the tacoma as an application. it may fit, but i can see a dealer saying- you used an incorrect part and since your engine has died, you are on your own.

It seems as though it shouldn't, dealership has not mentioned it to me, purchased from Toyota through Amazon. OEM direct replacement for YZZA1 filter housing. everything dimensionally was the same, no modification (some tundra/4R owners needed to swap the inner tube with the longer tube). I'll be hearing back from Toyota Corp on a claim so if they come back with either this or the TRD intake/exhaust, I'll be sure to drop an update here.

Here is a side by side comparison of the OEM plastic and aluminum ones.

I did the same thing...dealership had it tighter than is ever necessary. 20190622_152111.jpg and so begins the Amazon oil filter cap and wrench ads at the bottom of the page!
