In addition to this and regardless of caliber...one has to be very proficient (under high stress) to effectively place a round in the proper location.

Take a listen if you’re interested in a serious discussion the topic. It’s not the hide, it’s penetrating the skull. 9 and 40 can do it with the proper bullet, something heavy for caliber and hard cast flat pointed solid lead.

I can, and enjoy, practice with my handguns. At $40 a can I’m not going to be able to practice with bear spray nearly as often. You still have to hit a charging bear in the face with it, so you still need to practice (and hope you aren’t upwind).

Reading the studies in your link a few things jump to mind:

    1) Although the shooter may be able
to kill an aggressive bear, injuries to the shooter and others
also sometimes occur. The need for split-second deployment
and deadly accuracy make using firearms difficult, even for
experts. Consequently, we advise people to carefully consider
their ability to be accurate under duress before carrying a
firearm for protection from bears. No one should enter bear
country without a deterrent and these results show that
firearms are not a clear choice.

Efficacy of Firearms for Bear Deterrence
    in Alaska

    2) Firearms failed to protect people for a variety of reasons

including lack of time to respond to the bear (27%), did not
    use the firearm (21%), mechanical issues (i.e., jamming;
14%), the proximity to bear was too close for deployment
(9%), the shooter missed the bear (9%), the gun was emptied
and could not be reloaded (8%), the safety mechanism was
engaged and the person was unable to unlock it in time to use
the gun (8%), people tripped and fell while trying to shoot
the bear (3%), and the firearm’s discharge reportedly triggered the bear to charge that ended further use of the gun
    (1%).

Efficacy of Firearms for Bear Deterrence
    in Alaska

    3) Although firearms were successful (84% handgun; 76%
long gun) in deterring aggressive bears in the records we
studied, we do not claim that these rates represent the
outcome for all bear–firearm incidents throughout Alaska.

Efficacy of Firearms for Bear Deterrence
    in Alaska

    4)
Success rates by firearm type were similar with 84% of
handgun users (31 of 37) and 76% of long gun users (134
of 176) successfully defending themselves from aggressive
    bears

Efficacy of Firearms for Bear Deterrence
    in Alaska

Although bear spray was 92% effective by our definition of success, it is
important to note that 98% of persons carrying it were
uninjured after a close encounter with bears.

Efficacy of Bear Deterrent Spray in Alaska

This is why I decided to go spray instead of firearm. Also, in many National Parks it is illegal to carry a firearm. Sprays are allowed. Of course the #1 deterrent is to avoid putting yourself in situations in the first place. While it can't prevent surprise encounters good trail safety and camp safety should be the very first step.

maybe the ' Glock Store ' can help U with a Single Stack 10 MM

no less maybe point U in a good direction

the ' 454 CASULL ' is carried by many around bears
UNquestionable knock power ...................... Not many bullets
    reliable as hell
    big recoil

thing is the numbers U crunch dont advise U about the nature o bears

    tho encounters are seldom
they are NOT UNawares by the bear
    the bear KNOWS U r there !!!!!

when in sight proximity................. the bear oft times will circle
more the reason i would NOT overly trust spray

    a charge is both Defensive/Offensive
apex predators dont like being crowded.................. U are in Their Zip Code !!

    good luck

I like my Glock 20. Modding it sounds cool but I will leave it alone, it works great.
