Hi all, well today I learned something about the FOB.
I have 2 FOBS 1 I keep in my coat pocket and the other sits on the kitchen table. This morning started the truck with the FOB as it was -10 and after about 5 minutes of running.I put on my coat and headed out the door walked up to the truck and it would not unlock when I touched the door handle.Hmmm that is odd cause it always works.
Tried a few more times still no success. So I put my hand in my pocket to grab the FOB and see if I can unlock but noticed the FOB was not in my pocket and looked inside and sure enough the FOD was in my coffee cup holder.
So went inside got my other FOB and walked up to the truck and bingo the doors unlocked.
So this means you can remote start your vehicle with the FOB locked inside the vehicle.
I always thought that if the FOB is inside that the doors would not lock or start.
Has anyone experienced this on theirs. Be kind.

Did the engine turn off when you opened the door like typical?

Yes it did that is why I thought it was odd that it would with the FOB inside. I am also surprised that the truck would even start with the FOB inside and lock the doors too.

Just leave your FOB inside and use your secondary FOB to remote start it and see if it works.

How do you know the first fob didn’t have a dead battery because of the cold?

The fob was not in the truck overnight. I had used the truck hours earlier in the morning and somehow left it in the car by accident or it fell out of my pocket not sure but it is a lesson learned when I took it out of the truck I tried it and it worked fine, locked , unlocked and started the truck so it was not a dead battery or frozen. Don't forget -10 C is only 50 F so no way the battery would freeze.

when remote starting with the smart fob, you must lock the truck. it will lock all doors, whether your fob is in the truck or not. obviously if you remote started it, and the keys were in the truck, either, you were in the truck with the only fob you have, or you remote started it with a second fob. either way, you would not be completely stranded. I have been starting mine with the fob inside the truck, with the second fob since 2019. what I do to avoid carrying both fobs is, unlock the truck with the second fob, prior to walking out the door to the truck. Pretty sure they meant 10c, not -10c. Cuz 10c is 50f and it checks out with the weather in Gilles. But yea, still funny. Doesn't take long either. The batteries in my cheapo depo digital tire guage say they are dead all the time. Even replaced them and still happens.

But that is interesting considering Toyota has gone to stupid lengths to "make you feel safe" by stopping your already started vehicle when you open the door. They way it should be is if the fob is not present then yes, shut the ignition off. If the fob is present then you just press the start button and it's good to go. That's the way it is on my families Ram 2500. If I wanted it to shut off an ensure my safety I'd chose it in the settings. It would be under a "save the starter" setting ;)

What would be nice is if they at least let you hit the unlock button and that keeps it running. Anyone tried this? Instead of the usual fob in the pocket walking up and opening the door?
    *EDIT
Just tested it, doesn't work. As soon as you unlock it the truck shuts off.

Maybe some kind of warning also to remind you that you left a keyfob in the truck would be safer than turning it off after you remote started it. Since that door ajar goes haywire on mine if I open the door before shutting it off and then shut it off with the door open, you would think there would also be a warning after so many minutes that your fob is still in the truck. I could see this happening with the Toyota app if you use it, but without it I wouldn't want my truck to show signs I left the key fob in it. Like flashing the lights or something, or a constant warning on the dash. I think what Dodge also does is that if you try to lock via fob and there is another fob in the truck, it won't lock and the lights will all stay on. That makes sense. Like "hey, you forgot something". But then again, some people just don't pay attention.

Really no winning here. But the whole shut the truck off thing is dumb. And I agree OP, if the fob is in there, it shouldn't let another fob remote start it. It should require a button press.

not just a toyota feature, most Asian mfg'd vehicles have this feature, open any door after using the remote start feature, and the engine shuts off. our Subaru does the same thing. think of it this way, it is safety for you, so a thief doesnt walk up to your running car, break the glass, or open the door via unlocking, and drives off with your auto.

just hitting the unlock button on the fob, does not shut off my tacoma, or our Subi. Ski

    10c is not 10f LOL. 10c is about 50f. 10f is about -12c. Ski

Be careful you don't lock the fob in your truck next time. You're lucky the other one was nearby

I'm intrigued... in theory you could then open the doors without the remote start shutting off. But then again it's not supposed to lock with a fob inside..

But maybe the FOB outside overrides the one inside, then it still wouldn't matter...

I have 2 sets of keys/fobs and I may try it if we don't get an answer.

I answered that for you, a few posts above:

when remote starting with the smart fob, you must lock the truck. it will lock all doors, whether your fob is in the truck or not. obviously if you remote started it, and the keys were in the truck, either, you were in the truck with the only fob you have, or you remote started it with a second fob. either way, you would not be completely stranded. I have been starting mine with the fob inside the truck, with the second fob since 2019. what I do to avoid carrying both fobs is, unlock the truck with the second fob, prior to walking out the door to the truck. Ski

even with the other fob inside the truck, once any door is opened, the truck will shut off. this is a safety, anti-theft feature built into most late model, asian factory optioned, autos. Ski
