Which is smart since your approaching retirement. Sure, keep some "play" funds to bet with but put the bulk in things that are secure.

You're talking about how you as an individual invest and choose an asset allocation. I'm talking about how buyers price asset classes. These are two completely different things.

The data suggest that a higher allocation of stocks in retirement actually decreases the risk of portfolio failure over the course of retirement, contra long held conventional wisdom of bonds, bonds, bonds:

    https://www.morningstar.com/articles/1070407/better-stocks-than-bonds-in-retirement

Quick question, and not intended to be rude, but is anyone other than me in this conversation retirement ready right now? As in could walk out of their job tomorrow if they felt like it?

Interesting link. I already have the diversification plan my personal assets when I get closer to retirement. A large % will still be in the market.

Not rude at all. I'll be turning 48 this month. I'm about 10-12 years from comfortable retirement. I spent a large chunk if time between 29 and 35 working as little as possible and traveling/climbing as much as possible. I knew it was going to set back my retirement goals. I also knew that being able to fuck off for so many years while I was young, strong, and healthy wasn't something that I would regret in the future. I'll still retire "early" but not nearly as early as a potentially could have. No regrets about any of it.

I could. We'd be living skinny, but we could technically retire tomorrow if we absolutely had to. Just wouldn't be doing much aside from eating and sitting on the couch.

Edit: I'd also have to die around age 80, but who wants to live that long anyways.

Theoretically. But health insurance just makes it not worth it. And kids are young, so not like we can just go do fun shit yet anyway. But when they hit their mid teens we will wind down. I’d guess 7-10 years. No rush, we take plenty of vacations. Or when all these stocks go to the moon, then I’ll just be trying to find @kairo to crash his endless parties

The health insurance is the biggest bitch of the whole thing. Tying insurance to jobs basically forces people to remain in the labor pool for as long as possible.

If I moved to somewhere in central or south america I'd have it made in the shade. I speak very poor Spanish though.

The first chart in your linked article shows an average stocks/ bonds mix outperforming pure stocks over the last 20 and 40 years (assuming 4% annual withdrawals). The second chart shows the median, which means half would be lower and half higher. However that means most investors on stocks only would be lower, since the average stocks/bonds mix beat the stocks only mix as shown in them first chart. As the article states:
“While there's much to be said for the new custom--few retirees would willingly agree to plans that were expected to fail half the time!--it does contain a significant drawback.”
I’m not going to gamble in my main account, I’ll go with the wisdom of most financial advisors and investment institutions that recommend a stocks/ bonds mix. I am evaluating a stocks/dividend stocks/bonds and securities mix with my financial advisor.
One thing to remember is that a balanced porfolio for retirement is to minimize the adverse effects of a significant drop, and past market performance does not guarantee future performance, other than very long term trends the market should go up. Note that’s “should” - there have been times in the past where it was down or stagnant for many years.

I’m planning to retire early next year. For the record, I increased my portfolio by over $300k from 2018 to 2020 with contributions and gains, and am quite comfortable with my investments as they were then and are set now. I believe I chose wisely. You get to make your own choices and I get to make mine. Hope you do well no matter how you invest. :)

Bonus link: I found this article on boomer retirement investments to hedge against inflation interesting. In case you can’t read the Bloomberg article link, this is part of it:

My GF has fantastic insurance, way better than mine. We've been together for like 6 years now I think? Tax break would be good. I'm running out of excuses not to be married. I'm only 21 though, still got lots of time.

over/under on how many people saw me say I'm 21 and immediately thought:

"I fucking knew it, no wonder he acts like an idiot all the time"

    OR

"No way he's 21, probably 12 with a girlfriend that goes to a different school. You wouldn't know her"
