Lease question, did Toyota of Massapequa, NY lie to me?

My 2017 TRD Sport 6 speed manual lease (through Toyota financial) is up in October, I had made a deal with Toyota of Massapequa, NY to get a 2019 TRD Sport 6 speed in cement gray for 3k down (tax , DMV included!) $279/month. Seemed like a good deal, much better than my current one. I had given them a $1000 deposit on my credit card (refundable) to relocate the car from NJ to NY.

Today I go down there to take possession & turn in my old lease. After waiting for almost 3 hours the finance manager tells me that their credit unions (bethpage FCU, teachers, and a few others) wont allow a lease on a manual transmission vehicle. They wanted to charge me an extra $50 / month through Toyota financial due to higher money factor? FWIW I have a credit score of 844. At that point i demanded my deposit back, had harsh words with a few of the managers who tried to play dumb & left. They can have fun trying to get rid of that truck because according to them "no one buys stick shift cars anymore".

Does anyone know if credit unions really have a no manual lease policy? I have never heard of this before. Regardless they were very dishonest with me & wasted 3 hours of a sunny vacation day for me. But I want to know if they were outright lying to me or just incompetent before I complain to Toyota USA.

    thanks

PS - A Chevy Silverado RST Z71 is in my near future for better price with a lot less headache attached to it. The Tacoma is a great truck but Im sick of getting treated like an asshole for wanting to drive stick shift. Whats the point of offering it in stick if you put people through hell to get them. My last lease was a giant headache to get also.

exactly, its like them saying they wont lease yellow or pink cars because they are harder to resell?

Go talk to Kevin B at Millennium in Franklin Square, tell him Quimby sent you and he’ll treat you like family. He might even be able to swap with Massapequa to get that exact truck if they are on working terms.

In regards to a no manual clause... I’ve never heard that, but it certainly could mess with the residual causing your payment to go up.

Ok, I’ve put some more thought into this (a few more sips and songs). It might be that that CU has considered that repo’ing a manual would leave them with a longer hold time to sell it. And that might translate to more costs.

Hmm, just did the math on a $20k loan for 48 months. $50 difference is like a 6% change in rate. Better make sure they’re using protection because you’d be getting it hard.

<edit> missed the lease part so my numbers may be off; no residual in my math.

thanks man, if for some reason the silverado deal falls through Ill give him a call.. as far as the residual they should have done their homework before offering the deal, the deal came from the general manager by the way, not some sales guy. My current 6 speed Taco's buyout was ~26k, on a 38k purchase price. You know they are gonna turn around and sell if for 32k though with only 20k miles on it. What would it be if it was automatic?

nothing to worry about now, im not getting the truck from them lol. I see what you mean about the longer sell time, but why would they need to repo it from a guy who has always paid loans back on time? I actually financed my c6 vette (6 speed!) through that credit union 5 years ago, paid that loan off early.

If you've worked through them before, call them up and ask them if that's their policy and, if so, why. Even if you hadn't, they would explain if it were the case or not.

Honestly having a real conversation here I’ll retract the crap comment. The thing is the new GM trucks just haven’t grown on me yet at least not all the way. I like em a lil more now than when they first came out :notsure: but nothing in the way of mechanical or anything else it’s just an optics thing. I eventually come around on all brands with the looks thing just not feeling the Silverado yet... but I will

Stay with the Tacoma , just go to a different dealer. Manual is no different then leasing an automatic.

Why not just call the credit unions and ask what thier policy is? I would have done that from the sales floor

BINGO. Call the CU on the spot.
“Mr Finance Mgr, that sounds really weird, are you sure? Hmmm, let me call those CU’s right now to confirm because I just can’t believe that.
‘Hi CU, do you have any stipulations or surcharges for financing manual vehicles? No, you say? Hmmm, sounds like the A-hole at the dealership lied to me then. Thanks!’ Bye A-hole”.
