I wonder what the dealership tech would think/react if they notice the dashcam is hardwired in the fuse box and keeps on recording even if the engine is shut off.

Are they going to be offended or upset? Should I just remove it prior to dropping off to the dealership?

No dont worry about it, I work on lots of vehicles with dash cams never felt anything about them. Im a little more aware of what I say about the vehicle/brand but thats about it.
I've got dash cams in my Tacoma and Civic.

They see so many dashcams I doubt they even notice. I leave mine running all the time.

Dashcam caught the service advisor and a tech driving thru a fast food line in my truck.

    Brutal.

I unplug them if audio is recording, most of which do by default.

The problem is, they have every right to see what is done to their car. But I can be fired on the drop of a hat for what I say, even if its not legally recorded.

Toyota has OEM dash cams that have an easy mute button, I wish they all did.

Mine is wired to my rear view mirror and literally nobody has ever noticed unless they really look for it. Not visible from the drivers seat and barely visible from outside

Different states have different wiretapping laws and these apply to dash cams as well. [OP] A quick search of "Texas wiretapping law dash cams" tells me that you might want to mute your dash cam or at least tell the service advisor/tech that it has audio recording capabilities, or maybe both. There looks like some penal code is on the books in your state. I'm sure nothing will ever get escalated or happen but who knows.

I could play uneducated armchair lawyer on that one all day. Service techs have no legal expectation of privacy while inside your car. Falls under the same rules of running a nanny-cam inside of your home. A private space can become a public space whenever an employee is on premises, therefore, public surveillance rules apply.

The dealer that I have used the past two times always turns my dash cam upwards so it is not pointing towards the front of the vehicle. This first time I shrugged it off as a coincidence but then it happened again. I don't care as long as they don't break it.

Id be more upset about them touching my camera and that seems like a red flag to me. also getting the perfect position of the camera is part of the install, id be pissed if they touched it every time.

This was the article I read a few years back that helped formulate my opinion. I don't mute my dash cam either when taking it in for service. I just think it's a good thing to know about the archaic laws that haven't been updated for the 21st century. Especially since this is a nation of frivolous lawsuits.

I keep my dashcam on mute all the time. My state is a "two party consent" state so recording without letting anyone know can get me in deep trouble.
