I'm sorry, but you have a false argument here. If you want/need better lights your options are NOT $1600 PRO headlights or nothing, in fact the best upgrade to lighting you can do costs LESS than what you have spent.

and again, this idea that you have more/better light because the road in front of your truck is brightly lit is the entirely the wrong idea. The factory lights are not great but they put the light where it's needed, out THERE. That makes them FEEL dim since there is not a bunch of light right in front of you but you don't need light right in front of you at 60mph, you need it WAY down the road. It has been shown time and time again that the average LED replacement bulb puts light close in but fails to put it out THERE. Getting light away from the truck is what you need.

Again, your only options are not $1600 pro lights or nothing, and truly better lighting actually costs LESS than what you spent.

I have one in college and another going in about 2 years!! So I hear you and understand you 100% on spending big money on pro headlights. I was happy with my Hikari led bulbs I bought last year during Amazon cyber Monday. It held me over for about a year until I was ready to get pounded in the arse all over again by Toyota parts for the pro headlights.

Hikari led bulbs made me happy.

OEM led made the folks 100 feet ahead of me that I was about to run over happier! :D

After all that rambling, you never mentioned what the options are that cost less. If I were to put lights on the end of a 10 foot pole, does that count as putting it "WAY down the road?"

I have been happy with VLED replacement bulbs. Was originally planning on replacing the full housing but decided I didn't want to spend the money. The VLED's are plenty bright and all the people coming the opposite direction hate me.

if only we had a thread that covers all this….

If only the op had said he read all these threads…

if you think putting a flashlight on a pole is getting light “way out there” it probably explains why I had to make the first two points

There are some very passionate opinions on replacing bulbs in a factory housing designed for halogen (and technically, they are 100% correct). I got "shamed" (in a nice way) for putting $40 xenon/HID bulbs/ballasts from Amazon in my '21 SR5. Apparently, factory projectors emit a rectangle of light above the cutoff beam (you can see it when pointed at a wall or garage door) that is less bright, but still there, and can cause issues with oncoming drivers. That said, I did it and won't be turning back - I haven't had even a flash from other drivers (not that it won't happen). The output / throw of the HID's are 3x what the halogens were (I even tried the high output H9's and was dissapointed). They are brighter and better than the factory LED's on our 2 other cars. When I did my research, it appeared that replacement HID's are "better" than the technology in LED bulbs for this purpose (putting in a non LED/HID housing), so I went with HID and won't look back.

Just my experience, this is not my passion so I would listen to the experts on this over myself.

Oh they are. I have a simple rule: you flash your brights and I flash mine...and mine always brighter. I enjoy searing retinas to prove a point.

Language, language, language guys - we're all here to have fun and share knowledge, no? Doesn't seem anybody is going to win over this crowd with expertise and knowledge (which is likely 100% accurate). Some people, including me, just want a brighter light that, albeit perhaps via trickery to our eyes and brain, makes things more visible. I don't doubt the science at all, but my brain is having a very hard time comprehending how what I can see with now via HID's is less than what I saw with factory or even H9's. I read the very impressive lighting post, and frankly wouldn't bat an eye at converting to factory TRD Pro headlights, but in the end, I spent $40 on Amazon and, like others, am a happy camper.

I would just say that there are two things here.
You have HIDs that others tell you likely are not “better”, but in the end you are happy and you are not getting flashed over.

It’s entirely something different to put in lights that you ARE getting flashed over and to not take it that your lights are too bright but to instead deciding to purposely make it even brighter to make it worse for the other person.

My post you quote was in response to the second, not the first. It’s one thing to have lights that may or may not be better but be happy with them and not blind others, what he said is entirely different.

to be honest, I have seen rebased HID bulbs perform reasonably in halogen projectors, it’s entirely possible yours are working well or well enough. Now, light is tricky and our eyes and our mind like to lie to us, but you are aware of that and still feel they work for you. The only person you might be harming is you, and it’s probably not much harm if that.

Haha gotta love the newbies here. If only you knew I’ve done quite a few headlight retrofits already, or that I’ve contributed already to numerous headlight threads. At this point this topic has been beaten to death so much it’s not worth being serious when someone posts a new thread about this topic.
