Here is a night shot of an 1800 lumen LED bicycle light. I have several of these and they are indeed as bright as it looks in this pic...........for 3.5 hrs anyway. I have no thoughts of them replacing HIDs or halogens on cars but it sure has on my bikes...

Was it raining in the last photo? Seems like a lot of unusual looking diffusion in the middle.

    That stamp is actually worthless.

APC had a bunch of their clear taillights hauled in front of the DOT 10 years ago and declared illegal because there were no red light bulbs that met the spectral requirements for "red" as defined in title 49CFR 571-108.

SAE/DOT on the lens simply means that the manufacturer CLAIMS that the assembly meets requirements. There is no regulation on the manufacturer side.

Swarm of gnats? Who knows, those were pics of the ebay listing for one of those lights. Yeah, made in china but for 25.00 shipped I have been very impressed. I'll never spend hundreds of dollars for bike lights again.

Perhaps you are right Rich, but to be honest, I would be more apt to consider using something that DID have a DOT mark rather than something that blatantly did NOT have it. Also in some states it is actually illegal to use ANY lighting, or lenses that are not DOT approved. *cough, California, cough*

I'm actually running these in my truck now. I'm good friends with the guy who owns VLEDS so my truck is his test truck and he's having me run them just to see how they do. They do produce what they say at 1800 lumens. Plenty bright. It technically has a HI beam but its more of a brighter low beam. The fan is actually needed to because it only uses one big LED it does get pretty warm. They work great though. I love me only downside is that they aren't a perfect match to my V3 tritons

My point was that the DOT stamp on the lights does not indicate that they are DOT approved. It simply indicates that the manufacturer CLAIMS that they are DOT legal.

Those APC lights that were determined by the DOT to be illegal indicated on the lens that they were "DOT"
