Hello to all, I have a 2013 Takoma Pre-Runner SR5 double cab with the puny factory tail/turn/brake lights that are LED. Does anyone know of an aftermarket LED tail light that puts out more light than the OE version. All of the LED replacement lights that I find on the internet say they will not work on a vehicle that came with LED lights as original equipment. Thanks in advance for any input.

    Brake, or reverse?

Which one needs to be brighter?

    Are you tinting these?

The tails arent bright enough? Or the brake lights? I know the brake lights are bright enough to burn a hole in your retinas, and the tails are DOT approved, so I'm not sure why you would want brighter. Maybe add another tail light, like those ones that go under the tailgate?
Edit: welcome to tacomaworld by the way.

Recon makes some nice looking tail lights. I've got the depo smoked out stock version and they are pretty bright. Not sure how anyone could miss them

The brake and tail lights are not bright at all, especially when viewed from an angle. The same lights on my other vehicle are so much brighter there is no comparison. No, I have not tinted them. Everything is just as it came from the factory. Thanks.

I would start by adding an LED Third brake light - much brighter than stock

Did you buy your truck used? Did the previous owner do something to them to make them dim? I've never heard of anyone complaining that these tail lights were too dim

I have considered adding additional lights, either below the tail gate or maybe something small on top of the bed cover right under the rear window, but didn't want to get too tacky.

Chad's Pride, The light under the tail gate is nice looking and probably the best option. It seems like every time I see one, several of the led's are out makes it look bad.

Wiring is the easy part. Should just be a positive and negative that you splice into your current tail light wires, the part that always worried me was how those strips are attached to the truck. I think most of them just use 3m adhesive double sided tape. Not sure how well that holds up over time

That's odd, maybe you got a defective set of tail lights. All the led ones I've seen that came after 2011, have been almost too bright to look at when you're behind them

Yeah, Ive seen that too. Doesnt look great when it happens I can agree.

Ive actually seen somebody hook up a long ass light bar right there for backing up.

    Pretty insane lol
That adhesive really holds now days. If you clean the shit out of the surface it really should never come off

A buddy of mine has the long strip under the tail gate. The running lights and brake lights, light up the whole bar from side to side. When the turn signal is turned on, it only lights up from the center to the side and flashes with the OE turn lamp, depending on which way you are turning. That might be my best option.

BTW, the mounting tape, 3M # 06384 (1/2" width) works really well. If you adhere it to a clean surface it will not come off. Some aftermarket LED lights are coming with that as the attaching method now. Do a google search for Truck Lite # 36105, 36115, 36100, 36110 and 36130 and add a R or Y to the end of the part number for red or yellow.

Thanks for all the help. Taco Juan, I'll check out Recon.

Whats not bright enough, brake, blinker or reverse?

The stock brake leds are pretty damn bright, blinkers dont need to light up the road as they just signal..... reverse, well these i can see being improved.

Inwood Customs, the running lights and brake lights. The turn signals are fine and the backup lights are fine.

Inwood Customs, no, but I'm afraid I will. The wife and I switched vehicles the other night and I was behind her following my truck. I was really surprised at how dim the brake and tail lights were. I know I'm an old fart but my eyes are not that bad. ;-) The brake lights in her Escalade will almost blind you. I just looked at the Recon site as recommended by Taco Juan and found this:

    https://www.gorecon.com/product.php...ing-Amber-White-Red-LED-Tailgate-Bar&p_cat=75

It should take care of the problem and will cost less than a replacement set of tail lights.

Thanks everybody for all the help and advise.
