Does anyone know what kind of LEDs or lights are behind those controls? The LED on the left side (I think thats the fan speed) went out and I can't see them at night. I was hoping to replace them, but I want to take the dash apart only once.

Also, I will probably be replacing them with white to match my gauges :D

My post must have confused you. The picture above are my gauges. I simply showed that to give an idea of what I was planning on doing.

I am talking about the lights behind the fan controls, the fan temperature and fan direction..ya know, center console area underneath the clock.

I don't appreciate the condescending remark about being amazed at what I can find. I know how to search. I searched and didn't find anything, which is why I posted here.

No you didnt search well. if you had read the lighting FAQ in the LIGHTING section on THIS board you would not have posted this. go read it. This has been brought up MANY MANY MANY times.

i think its a bulb not an led, and its really hard to change the colors cuz the hvac controls have orange plastic or paint or somethin on them.

they are easy to pop out as well, removing them is the first step to disassembeling the dash so its not complicated. i would just pop them out unplug them and check it out for myself

That does not give any information on the bulb other than it is an incandescent bulb.

Thanks I'll do that. I didn't realize it was the first step to taking the dash apart

So I took it all apart, got the bulbs out. Went to kragen, no luck. Went to pepboys, no luck. Went to radio shack, no luck. I guess I'll be going to the dealership tomorrow.

I snapped a shot of the bulbs in case anyone wants to see them. I don't know what kind they are.

I bought 2 white, 2 blue and 2 green just for the heck of it. One of the reviewers said they fit in his o5 tacoma

yeah, replaced mine last week '05 taco. they are like $11.25 at the dealer. i got lucky and while waiting at parts department, some guy had alot of extra bulbs from his wife's lexus. he gave me a couple, and even though the base of the bulb was different, i was able to pull the bulb out of the base (lexus) and put it in the taco bulb base.

I tried pulling the bulb out of the base, but they seem in there pretty tight. How hard were they to pull out for you?

you have to unwrap the wire leads coming off of the bulb and run them through the base.
    (sorry about poor picture quality)

I tried some of these and found them to be way too dim. The LED is too directional and not diffused at all so it doesn't really work very well with the climate controls.

Alright, good to know. At least they were cheap. I am going to try and find replacement bulbs tonight and if I can find them this time, I will put those back in. I need them asap for a desert trip. I am out of climate controls til the ones I ordered get here.

Ok so I went to radio shack and bought some 12V incandescent bulbs that were a tad larger (in size, not voltage. I don't know the voltage of the OEM ones.) than the OEM ones that burned out.

The leads were copper though that was the only difference. I plugged them in and they worked, however, they are pretty dim. What voltage should I use? I may just end up go buying the OEM ones for a ridiculous price.

Why is there no lighted 4x4 switch on your mod list, I could make on just match your dash!!

The OEM ones are 12V too, but probably a higher wattage which equals brighter light. I ended up soldering in a bulb I got from Radio Shack. I think it was the highest wattage 12V bulb that would fit that they had at the store. It's a little dim too but okay for now. Next time I'll probably just get them from the dealer unless I feel like digging through the Digikey or Mouser catalogs to find one. Hard to know what to get without knowing the actual wattage of the bulb.
