I just purchased a 2018 Taco TRD Off Road with the 6' bed (mag grey if it matters to anyone) and want to put a cap on it.

I have noticed very polarized thoughts about Leers or AREs...can people weigh in with pros and cons (productive ones and not rants would be preferred, but it takes all kinds).

I am not a primma donna, but aestetics matter a little. But my main concern is quality and leaking. I plan to do quite a bit of camping in the back and will not be happy about being wet and fixing leaks in the middle of the night.

Please let me know your thoughts.

I went with Leer because of the customer service of my local dealer.

It all comes down to the local reseller. I installed an ARE Cap and loved it, local team was great... lead time sucked... but it doesn't leak. My buddy installed a leer and likes it but it leaks ALOT. Find a reseller that you like and when they are installing make nice and ask them to add extra sealer (Don't know the name of the stuff) so it doesn't leak. I also climbed in the bed before I left, when I found light poking through I asked them to fill it in.

I have an ARE CX-HD on my long bed for over a year and love it. No leaks at all - I would've heard about it right away since my 2 kids sleep back there on camping trips (including the few rainy trips). The HD version includes an internal aluminum frame that distributes the weight (ARE claims up to 500lbs.) to the bed frame. I looked at Leer as well, but wanted the internal frame for the RTT.

I'm in Minnesota. There's a good Leer and a good ARE shop with competitive prices and good ratings.

I don't have a camper yet, But been eyeing on these two and pretty much going with the ARE. Leer was on my list but I can't stand the overlap of the camper. Its over lap the cab too much for my liking.

The load bearing aspects of this cap are a nice feature. I have the Leer and max weight is like 165lbs.

Either are about the same provided you are comparing similar models. Find out which one has the features you like the best and which dealer you like the best and pick that one.

I ended up with the ARE CX because the local Leer dealer fluffed up the deal. If I would have found a local Leer dealer that I liked better than the ARE dealer, I would have went with them. Cap wise, it doesn't matter too much.

I will say, the Windoors and roof rack are two options that will add about $1200 either way, but totally worth it. Make sure the dealer understands each option you want.... especially if you want two windoors!

I too have been having that problem with the Leer look: they are custom made and expensive but yet it looks like it isn't a perfect fit. I am assuming (perhaps wrongly) that it is a leakage prevention, but it just looks weird.

@taco_ace : Is the HD of the CX for load bearing? or what are the advantages/disadvantages to HD v. regular CX?

I went leer. Looks great and works just as good as it looks. No leaks and works great on the 6 foot bed to camp or hell take a nap at lunch if it's not to hot out lol.

I got my ARE for 12 Tacoma at Toppers and More in South St.Paul used. Leer tonneau at Radco Blaine, that was for GMC Denali HD. 18 Tacoma has factory tonneau, didn't want it, but came on truck with dealer trade.
