Just finished finalizing my order for a Leer 100XR. Excited for sure but it will be 5-7 weeks on delivery :annoyed:

In the mean time, does anyone have any recommendations on what to do before the shell arrives? I know bed stiffeners are highly recommended so i'll probably take care of those soon. The shop I ordered it from stated they take care of all of the weatherproofing during install but I was wondering if those with covers have any suggestions on things to take care of before then.

    Thanks!

I don't know how much better the 2016+ bed rail caps are sealed vs the 2nd Gen, but I would look into pulling those and sealing underneath it.

I’m considering washing and putting a fresh coat of wax on back of cab before ordering mine?

I was definitely planning on washing it before taking it in. Waxing it wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I ordered a Leer 100XQ for my 2020 Pro AG. Truck is supposed to be built next week. My shell order is on hold. Since AG is a new color, they want to wait until they can get the VIN so the color will match. Which sucks because I was originally hoping the truck and shell would arrive about the same time. This will be my daily driver work truck and I need the shell to securely haul everything.
I've learned a lot here on TW. Already ordered bed stiffeners. As soon as I get the truck, I plan on running a bead of silicone under the bed rails and fill the gaps in the front corners. If I see any other holes in the bed, they will be filled as well. Once the shell is on, I'll install a tailgate gasket and full Bedrug. It will be made weather tight!
My first truck, a '86 Toyota Pickup, had a shell on it the week after I bought it. The shell did not have a front window, just a gasket to the back window. I ran it for 330K+ miles and never had a leak.

What bed stiffeners did you go with? I have a Leer 100XR on the way for my MGM Pro which should arrive mid to late Feb. I've read bed stiffeners are a must for the long run of the truck. Post pics when you get the 100XQ on your AG! I wanted to go with that model because it's aesthetically so much cleaner than the XR, but I need the full sliding windows for my dogs and lake runs during the summer.

Excuse my ignorance, why are bed stiffeners necessary for a camper shell? I've got a 2020 Tacoma and I'm looking at getting a Leer 100XR cap.

If no rtt they aren't. I have had my cap on for 75000 miles, and my buddy had his for 5 or 6 yrs. Neither had any issues with the bed staying straight.

1 person has issues then it becomes a huge fad where you will destroy your trucking you dont add them.

I ran a Snug Top shell on my 1994 SR5 4x4 for almost 400,000 miles and never had this issue. I had a spray on bed liner installed prior to getting the cap but don't see where this would add any structural integrity to the bed. I'm planning on putting a Leer cap on my 2020 Tacoma at some point in the future but I'm leery of drilling holes as the link above says is required. Are these things a "must have" for a camper shell??

If you drive off road or on rough roads, the flexing of the bed can cause the shell to crack.

There have been some here that have experienced bed cracking. I ordered a Pro for my daily driver / work truck. It will have my equipment in the bed all the time. I plan on keeping it at least 300k+ miles and 20+ years. It doesn't hurt to have a small investment that might prevent damage.
