The shell looks really nice on your truck, good find!

BTW my Leer XR100 is on stock suspension. No sagging at all and its been on there for 6 years now. I guess it all depends on what you put IN the bed as well, for me its usually minimal.

I like the look of those 4runner wheels! The '15 Taco that I recently purchased came with a Leer top, the side windows flip up like the hatch window. Ironically, my truck is MGM and the cap is the body color of your truck!

Great deal on the cap- as others have said, they're $2K+ new for anything nice.

If you get the numbers off the struts you should be able to get them on Amazon. I did this last year for my ARE Z cap, exact same strut for maybe $20/pr. the originals lasted ~7 years until they got weak and wouldn't open the door when cold.

Already thought about that, but the place I bought it from was a body shop that did a proper job of painting it. Removed windows, sanded the whole thing, prime, paint. The story I got is that the owner bought it for his 3rd gen, had it painted to match, then when they installed it realized it was for a 2nd gen. The owner didn't like the look, paid for the paint job and never picked it up, told the paint shop to keep it or do whatever they want with it. So I drove out to VT on 4th of July 2018 to buy it before me and my wife left for a 40 day cross country road trip. (left on 7/17/18) so I found it juuust in time!

Edit: we ate some BBQ, watched fireworks, nearly hit a moose on the way home. It was a great short trip hahaha.

I also welcome any advice on how to fix these two boogers. The top lift support mount on one side is wobbly. It’s riveted on there so I’m not too sure what to do about it.

Also, the piano hinge for the back glass is starting to separate on the same side. I haven’t taken the glass off to get a closer look yet but I suppose I’ll either have to try and crimp it back together as tight as I can or look at replacing it down the road. For right now I’m only running one shock and it lifts the whole window with no issues and also keeps the window square in the shell. When I put the lift support on this side it jacks the whole thing up and puts the hinge in a bind.

Pop rivets can easily be drilled out and replaced. I use my manual rivet gun quite a bit on projects. Most likely you'll have to remove the back hatch. On mine, there are two set screws on each end of the "hinge." By removing the hatch or glass, will give you plenty of access to the hinge bracket. I think by drilling out the old rivets, realigning the bracket and putting in new rivets should fix the problem. At least by my thinking.

Glad to see you putting some TLC into that cap.

Great find and story. Gas struts are easy and generic. Find a local cap place, match to the one you have, buy a pair of new ones, install yourself (just a few spring clips), and then giggle boyish as you open and close it reapeatedly.

    Stock for now.. maybe
You could also drill the rivets out and replace with a few nut and bolts.

@ricknobinson this is how I rolled after I first got my 15. I needed a cap fast. Close enough. The wheels helped make it work better.

I had to do a lot of research and work on the rear door main seal, lock, brake light, and tricky bottom corner seals near the tailgate.

First thing I did was new struts, then half the work was either minor benchtop fabbing on gaskets/seals, getting some special 3M trim tape, etc. The XQ looks great, but it has several draw backs, and now I bought what I really wanted to spec. Hit me up if you need any advice or resources, and my thread and gallery have multiple pics of work in progress.

I rolled the dice and bought a couple lift supports on Amazon a couple weeks back. Unfortunately, they’re just too strong especially with one side of the hinge screwed up. It puts the whole thing in a bind. I’m returning them for some 28 pounders that should work better and one I get the mount and the hinge fixed it should be good as new!

I haven’t taken it apart yet to figure out if it needs fixed or actually replaced. I did email Leer about it a couple weeks ago so we’ll see what they say.
