Leer Shell wiring (yes I searched this)

I recently bought a used Leer 100r with the unused factory pigtail for the third brake and dome lights with it. I was looking at diagrams and everyone taps into the tail light for the dome light which would mean the park lights and key will have to be on. On my 2002 z71 I had a constant hot wire behind the trailer plug just for this purpose, but the Tacoma does not. So what would be the best way to have a constant hot 12v in the rear of the truck?

P.S. This would be for the dome light in the shell, future 12v receptacles, and future switched reverse lights.

 

Run a fused power lead from the battery on back. Route it carefully and use wire loom.
This is what my install shop did...though a sloppy job of it that I had to re-do. I used a heavier gauge wire and loom/zip ties unlike them.

 

I was thinking this would probably be the answer. Then I could run a heavy guage for future electrical additions from the battery back to the rear of the truck.
I have the idea now how exactly should I execute. I'm not familiar with fuse blocks or anything?

 

You can just do a simple inline fuse right off your battery. Something like...

No need to get all fancy with stuff unless your really going crazy with add on electrical stuff back there. Just put the fuse as close to the battery as you can. That way the entire run is protected against shorts. Size the fuse and wire to your expected loads.

 

Thanks! The most I see is a pair of reverse lights, 12v plug block, and the dome light with possible led strips.
What would be the cleanest way to connect to the battery?

I did exactly what cascadetaco said. Inline fuse right at the battery and ran wire back to the shell, in loom, lots of zip ties to keep it tidy. Someday maybe I'll do a fuse block under the hood for additional stuff. But this works great so far.

 

If you are going to run a wire directly to the battery you need to fuse it and you should add a low voltage disconnect to shut off power if anything is accidentally left plugged in or on. You can buy fixed voltage or adjustable models from electronics places, Amazon, ebay, etc.
