They don't have to pull the drum to look. There is an inspection plug on the back side of the backing plate to measure. You can see it in the second pic in the OP.

Personally, I would at least request a set of every rubber part in the area of the brakes and axel seals.

I’ve never had to replace rear brakes before 75k before. It’s crazy.

This is such a refreshing attitude. I'm very glad to hear that everything worked out. Other than fixing the oops, the only thing that needs to happen on Toyotas part is to verify this is an isolated incident. If this is widespread, then a recall is in order, but in that case again the only thing Toyota is responsible for is making the vehicles right.

Toyota corporate just called me and they are going to have my local dealer inspect wheel bearings and axle seals and replace if necessary because of the heat exposure from the fire. They confirmed evidence of a fire from the peeling paint inside the drum assembly and also confirm that my new brakes that I installed are solid and in good shape. They also mentioned that this could result in a recall or service bulletin if their internal investigation turns up numerous situations similar to mine.

I had a similar issue out on the trail once when I went through a puddle my left wheel locked up and would drag going forward until I put it in reverse then everything seemed fine and haven’t had it happen since.
