As far as a suggestion, I’d say try to stay with something that mounts the tent low over the bed so very little of it is above the cab. Of course that method has pros and cons but for me the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

I had a local guy fab my rack to be modular and low so I can use part or all of it since I still use the truck for work on occasion. I wanted to keep it low to minimize drag/negative impact on fuel mileage. For me the only drawbacks to this method are 1) when I deploy the ladder, the rungs aren’t level with the ground so it hurts on the feet if I climb it barefoot, 2) the window directly behind the cab can’t be fully opened.

I’ve seen Avid bed bars that look somewhat similar to what I did. A bedrack like the ones BoxRocket was making(and tons of people have copied) keeps the tent low and also allows for attachment of various other accessories. I guess it’s up to you and your preferences.

That's what I was thinking. The debate is between a rack or bars.

The only benefit to bars over a rack in my mind is that they can be removed easier than a rack if you take it all off the truck regularly.

The additional options that a rack allows made it the way to go for me. Lights mounts, antenna mount, tool mounts, HighLift mount, etc

Of course because of the additional Steel/fab work a rack will be much more expensive in the long run. You get what you pay for though. For what it’s worth, even though I made mine modular with the intent of using only the front part of it most of the time, I haven’t ever removed any part of it.

I can take some better ones later on but this was when I mounted the tent for the first time.

Looks good. So I've seen some people have 3 bars . Do you get any bounce or flex from not having a 3 supports going to the cross bars??
Any bed flex or is that a second gen thing?

So some new events happen. My passenger lower control arm bushings gave up the ghost.I'm getting parts together for the fix. I have the whiteline bushings on order. I'll be knocking out the other components in the front too.ie tierod ends and inners.
Also I was at the fab shop talking about a rack. May have a lead on a pre built one.and.. I picked up these babys up from power coating while I was there. 2 toned. So i can see leaks easier and I'll be able to find whatever my clumsy ass drops on top of them.. which is every nut and bolt.

So the taco got put on the back burner for a min while I was finishing fixing my scooter. So that i can have a alt means of transportation while i do some front end work.
All the parts are in so i just need some time to get er done.
Since my crackhead neighbors felt that since they were up everyone else needed to be. I got to work on making some new cables for the winch. And maybe breaking the winch in the process...
    Anyways . I think they look fancy.20181227_171903.jpg
    And the winch issue.

Sorry man, I’m not sure why I hadn’t seen this post before today.

I’m sure 3 bars would be more ridged but I haven’t noticed any flex either when driving or when in the tent. When I’m out camping it’s usually two people in the tent and other than truck suspension movement, I really don’t feel like any part of the tent needs more support.

Well its been a little bit so time for an update i guess.
So i dived into the front end chasing a knocking/clunking noise on the passenger side. I have been stockpiling parts for a bit and just needed some time off and an excuse to get to it .
I was gifted an old set of lower control arms from @Ace115 . Thanks man!! So i purchased some whiteline bushings. Whiteline W53377A Control Arm... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N9GQMT0?ref=yo_pop_ma_share. i proceeded to press out the old bushings with the bottle jack method.

I thought id be crafty and make the removal and install of the lower control arms easier buy replacing/removing the inner and outer tierods. Which did help on the passenger side but not the drivers side which did involve loosening up and moving the steering rack.
I got my inner tierods from lowrange offroad. And for the outters i used some adecco's
    ACDelco 45A0833 Professional... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000C9PW0W?ref=yo_pop_ma_share
    ACDelco 45A0832 Professional... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000TNGBO2?ref=yo_pop_ma_share
So this is the passenger side. I was able to rotate the cam down on out without to much issue.
    20190102_153302.jpg
And not so much on the drivers side.
    20190103_133723.jpg 20190103_133332.jpg
This has been my helper for a lot of my projects lately. He's learning and getting some experience and i get cheep help.the whole project took me about 2 days .I'm slow and it got cold out. I took it to get an ailment the next day. Only the toe was off buy a couple of degrees . My fault in picking were to measure from. I did loosely follow timmy's videos and lowrange's videos.
    https://youtu.be/kmaZNBp1gZM
    https://youtu.be/AVQHgcXEhpE
Also worked on polishing up the winch. We sanded away the rust and washed some grime off. The drum got a fresh coat of enamel to try and prevent and new rust.
    20190107_163930.jpg
I also finished relocating the controller to the side and adding the new power and ground wires.i would have it all ready to go but i bought the wrong wire gauge for the ground eyelet. small wire on the bottom.
So hopefully the next day or two ill have it fully in. I have to mess with a couple of wire on my battery because of corrosion. The ground lug on my battery looks to have developed a crack next to it. causing the corrosion. So i purchased a kit to clean it up and hopefully prevent any more tell i can get a new battery.

    So time for an update.
So i broke down and took the truck into the shop again. The intermediate shaft was out in the stering column and was getting to the point were it was dangerous to drive. And i didn't have the time ..and i didn't want to mess with it to be honest. So it was pricey. But the shop only charged me for 2 hours of labor. And 450 for the part. So i don't feel like i got jiped. High note the truck steers amazing now!! It feels like a new truck. It should with all that I've done to it.

    And the winch.
Well its hopefully in its final resting spot.20190116_145221.jpg 20190116_145210.jpg
    And the wires.
So my clamps looked pretty bad.
    20190116_145228.jpg
I removed pretty much all of the cable's and cleaned them. Since i had the out i figured id pretty them up a bit.
    20190116_163449.jpg
And i ran out of light and have taken any more pics. I recovered the power wires too. Orilles was good to me and warranted my battery. So new yellow top is going in in the morning. And hopefully ill get the line all spooled up .
Shocks. Are going in for a rebuild on Tuesday.

What was it that caused the corrosion?

The neg terminal had a crack in the plastic.right next to the lug. I forgot to get a pic of it. But it was right below were a the corrosion was. On the right side.

So my local O'Reilly's hooked me up with a new battery. And after some struggles I was able to get everything all hooked up again.
    20190117_145842.jpg
Tested out the winch before i buttoned up everything. (It was given to me . Used and not working/correctly. ) with everything in order i polished up the turd.
Treated it to some good rope from masterpull.
    20190117_155805.jpg
And dressed up the front with some factor 55 ,fairlead and thimble.
    20190117_160315.jpg
    20190117_155512.jpg
So a 100' is definitely pushing it on capacity for my winch. But it all fit .now to get some recovery gear to go with it.and a cover for the winch.

Welp i got my coillovers rebuilt. New seals ,spherical barings (lower) and new oil.. to the tune of 270 for the set. I did also buy new spacers for the barings and the passengers sides were a little loose. The verdict is of for a bit if i should have waited for sdhq and gotten the flutter stack.but they were booked out tell the end of feb. The guy i went to was nice and got my shocks rebuilt in a day. But i don't think that he was comfortable with the icon valving. So i just got a stock rebuild. But they seemed to ride good. And don't blow through the travel anymore. Ill see how bad it is off road . They were pretty nice the last time i was out with my swaybar removed. Itll just be a expensive lesson learned. But ive been thinking about switching brands of shocks anyways so time will tell.
And im picking up my bed rack today so I'm excited about that.
And a pic of my truck missing shocks because why not!20190123_183326.jpg
