    Wow, that's pretty damn cool!

I have to say, as much incredible cool specialized stuff they have now, the basic stuff in random piles invites a helluva lot more creativity, and I think that is developmentally important...and that can lead to robotics eventually.

Neon, Solus beat me to it but to put together a large pile of pieces for your child to tinker with I'd strongly suggest spending some time on Bricklink as you can find anything LEGO there if you look hard enough. Just remember one thing if you are just trying to collect a large volume of pieces. Some obviously are worth more than others and sellers in the know are very well aware of that. Standard bricks in standard colors are definitely the way to go when it comes to value as you won't see specialty prices for them. Start looking at sets not for what they can be assembled into but how many pieces are in them for overall cost. High cost sets tend to have more specialty parts in them or are associated with a high dollar marketing partnership such as the Harry Potter and Star Wars stuff. If you just have to get some of those specialty parts try Bricklink for them specifically and you may be suprised at how much you can save.

Another thing to consider about second hand bricks is the hygiene issue. One persons "clean" may not be the equivalent to yours so be prepared to clean - Palmolive bath with some scrubbing using an old toothbrush does well - and even possibly toss out some "not exactly as described" pieces. For inspiration on projects to build with your child check bricklink and ebay for "Idea Book's" as LEGO group has published quite a few and they always included some free-form build plans for different projects ranging from simple to advanced. The best part is that no reading is required and everything is image based which makes it fun for those who haven't been presented with reading skills yet.

Here are some other LEGO related links that you may want to keep handy that hopefully will help.

    International LEGO users group.

The Brickfactory, an online collection of LEGO set plans.

Peeron.com, another online collection with additional information to search through.

The official LEGO group online collection of build plans.

Official LEGO club magazine free subscription page full of fun stuff for kids.

My Own Creation page is a great place to look for inspiration and to post pictures of your child's creations to share with others.

Ldraw is a CAD program for those that want to create and design with LEGO on their computers. You can even print out build plans and parts lists.

With that said I reckon you have figured out that I like LEGO as well. I don't get to tinker as much as I used to but I messed with allot of the LEGO train stuff and still have a reasonable collection of bricks in and or around twenty thousand piece mark which I look forward to sharing with my son once he is old enough to not try to eat them which means for now he get the DUPLO parts.

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
Nope, just a storage bin. It is several layers of with different size holes on each layer, smaller pieces are supposed to fall to the bottom. I have one but am yet to try it out. Like sifting for gold.
